About the role
Under the direction of the Transportation Superintendent, performs duties necessary to support the Transportation Division to ensure the proper construction, repair, and maintenance of streets, roadways, bridges, sidewalks, driveways, walking paths, curbs, gutters, and storm drainage systems.
Responsibilities
- Performs duties to support the Public Works Superintendent in the construction, repair, and maintenance of streets, roadways, bridges, sidewalks, driveaways, walking paths, curbs, gutters, and storm drainage systems, including:
- Setting forms
- Pouring, shoveling, and finishing concrete work
- Raking asphalt and pothole repair (hot or cold patch)
- Constructs, repairs, and maintains inlets, water feature structures, and storm flumes and structures, including:
- Installation, repair, and maintenance of boat ramps, storm pipes, inlets, baffle boxes, and bridges
- Conducting illegal discharge inspections
- Assists with the maintenance of City grounds, green spaces, retention ponds, right-of-ways, and common and other areas of City-owned property and/or facilities, including:
- Mowing, trimming, edging, sodding, and landscaping
- Baffle box clean out and maintenance
- Painting, lighting, trash, and debris removal
- Pond and outfall inspections
- Ensures safe use, proper care, and maintenance of all tools and equipment necessary to complete projects, assignments, and/or tasks.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Environment
Duties are performed primarily within an outdoor environment or setting. Possible exposure to electrical and chemical hazards; water; vibration; loud noise; inclement weather; dust, allergens, and mold.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- One (1) to three (3) years of work-related experience in Construction, Streets, or related fields
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, unless otherwise subject to any requirements outlined in law or regulation
- Valid Florida Class E driver's license
- Must pass pre-employment testing, including drug screen, physical, and background and credit checks
- Police Department applicants will also be required to take a Polygraph Examination
- Must be able to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County
