Transport Maint Crew Chief - Plainview

About the role

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis and contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put up warning signs, and organize crew response.
• Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
• Assists with surveying-related work.
• Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
• Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
• Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
• Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
• Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
• Operates light and heavy equipment.
• Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
• Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
• Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
• Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.

Requirements

• High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
• 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work (experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
• Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
• Valid driver’s license; must have a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

• Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes.
• Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection.

• Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.

• Subject to hazards—moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
• Subject to atmospheric conditions—fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation.

• Works frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; areas that can cause claustrophobia.
• Works in narrow aisles or passageways.

Conditions of Employment

• Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions; subject to random drug testing.
• Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
