About the role

The role involves performing basic design work and calculations, along with field work and using automated systems. Design activities are overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect, who has final approval authority.

Responsibilities

  • Transportation Engineer Tech I: Performs basic design work. Prepares field notes. Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Transportation Engineer Tech II: In addition to the duties listed above. Performs intermediate design work. Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications. Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Experience: Transportation Engineer Tech I: No experience required. Transportation Engineer Tech II: 2 years of experience in drafting, design, plan preparation.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures
  • Higher mathematics

  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
  • Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection; subject to noise; subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals; required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device; fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand; talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words; hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication; repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading; Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
