Transportation Engineer I/II/III (TP&D-Design)

About the Role

Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Responsibilities

• Transportation Engineer I
  • Assists with design, computer operations, and plan preparation
  • Coordinates and/or monitors assigned projects/programs/plans
  • Develops and/or reviews engineering-related documents, correspondence, reports, and remediation plans
  • Leads/trains professional and administrative staff
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT
  • Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts
  • Performs planning work such as plan review, calculations, and assisting in transportation planning studies
  • Writes/reviews proposals and estimates for letting
  • Coordinates with others to develop, monitor, and update integrated project plans and schedules
• Transportation Engineer II (in addition to above)
  • Assists in developing and/or monitoring budgets
  • Negotiates fees, explains scope of work, and monitors consultant design contracts
  • Performs complex engineering design work
  • Performs complex planning work such as plan review, calculations, and assisting in transportation planning studies
  • Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals, and/or standard sheets
  • Reviews, processes, and certifies project design plans developed by consulting engineers
• Transportation Engineer III (in addition to above)
  • Performs advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations, and transportation planning studies
  • Develops training courses and/or materials
  • Interprets maintenance standards, rules, methods, procedures, practices, and policies
  • Monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications
  • Trains engineering staff

Requirements

• Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science (bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS).
• Experience:
  • Transportation Engineer I: 4 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. Related graduate-level education may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
  • Transportation Engineer II: 5 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. Related graduate-level education may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
  • Transportation Engineer III: 6 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. Related graduate-level education may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
• Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid driver’s license (required for driving a state vehicle).
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (required within 6 months if licensed in another state).
  • If performing underwater bridge inspections: Open Water Diver certification.
  • For Bridge Inspection: Must complete a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification within one year of hire.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to environmental conditions, including protection from weather but not temperature changes
• Subject to outside environmental conditions with no effective weather protection
• Subject to extreme cold and heat (below 32°F and/or above 100°F for more than one hour)
• Subject to noise and vibration
• Subject to hazards such as moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places, heat, or chemicals
• Subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation
• Required to wear protective gear such as respirators, hard hats, or other devices
• Works frequently in small/crawl spaces, manholes, or areas that may cause claustrophobia

This position is identified as physically demanding and requires a pre-employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
