Training Manager

About the role

Develop and maintain the site training strategy, annual training plan, and role-based qualification matrices for operations, maintenance, logistics, and support functions.

Lead onboarding and new-hire integration, ensuring required safety, quality, and job-specific training is completed prior to independent work.

Create, review, and control training content (work instructions, SOPs, visual standards, OJT checklists, and assessments) in partnership with subject matter experts.

Implement and sustain a standardized OJT/qualification process (job instruction, observation, sign-off, and re-qualification) to support consistent performance across shifts.

Administer the training record system (LMS and/or SAP) to assign, track, and audit training completion, qualifications, and certifications.

Support and reinforce EHS programs (including LOTO, mobile equipment, fall prevention, confined space, and PPE) by ensuring training is current, documented, and effective.

Coordinate training related to new equipment, process changes, quality alerts, and incident corrective actions; ensure affected employees are trained prior to implementation.

Facilitate classroom, hands-on, and blended learning sessions; coordinate internal/external instructors and training logistics.

Lead and develop site trainers/mentors; establish expectations, standard work, and coaching routines to ensure training quality and consistency.

Conduct training needs analyses using performance data, audits, and stakeholder feedback; prioritize actions to close skill gaps and reduce variability.

Partner with leaders on performance management by providing qualification status, competency assessments, and development plans for employees.

Plan and schedule training to support production requirements (shift coverage, outages, new product launches), minimizing operational disruption.

Cross-shift communications on training requirements, standards updates, and qualification progress to ensure consistent execution.

Participate in 5S, Lean manufacturing, and continuous improvement activities by embedding standard work and problem-solving into training content and coaching routines.

Job Responsibilities

Manage the training budget (materials, external providers, certifications, travel) and prepare cost estimates for annual plans, compliance needs, and improvement initiatives.

Prepare and present training KPIs (completion, qualification coverage, overdue items, effectiveness measures) to site leadership and support audit readiness for internal/external reviews.

Communicate effectively with personnel at all levels and translate operational requirements into clear learning objectives and training materials.

Job Requirements

A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent certification is required.

A bachelor’s degree in Training & Development, Education, Organizational Development, Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and manufacturing experience is acceptable.

At least 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment with responsibility for training, qualification, or workforce development is required.

Steel mill/tube experience is a plus.

Experience developing and delivering training (classroom and hands-on) and managing site qualification programs, including assessments and sign-off processes is desired.

Working knowledge of manufacturing processes, standard work, problem-solving, and safety/quality systems is necessary.

Experience creating SOPs/work instructions and partnering on change management (new equipment/process changes) is highly valued.

The ability to translate operational requirements into clear training materials (SOPs, work instructions, visual standards, and OJT checklists) is essential.

Experience with a Learning Management System (LMS) and/or SAP for training assignment, tracking, and reporting is beneficial.

Strong safety awareness with the ability to support compliance training and audit readiness is important.

A detailed approach to measuring training effectiveness, identifying gaps, and implementing corrective actions is required.

An active participant in developing and maintaining a culture of learning, professionalism, and continuous improvement is expected.

The ability to coach and influence teams with varying levels of experience and possess strong facilitation and interpersonal skills is crucial.

Excellent planning and organizational skills, including the ability to schedule training around production priorities and shift coverage, are necessary.
