Trades Instructor - Automotive

About the Role

The employee in this position will provide Career and Technical Education to prisoners in the area of Automotive Repair, equipping them with skills for gainful employment after incarceration. The instructor will teach an approved MDOC curriculum, administer written and performance evaluations, maintain a safe work environment, and follow policy and procedure regarding tool control. Eighty percent of the work week is spent in direct supervision of prisoners inside a secure correctional facility.

Responsibilities

• Teach an approved MDOC automotive repair curriculum to incarcerated individuals.
• Administer written and performance-based evaluations.
• Maintain a safe work environment within the correctional facility.
• Adhere to tool control policies and procedures.
• Provide direct supervision of prisoners for 80% of the work week.

Requirements

• Possession of an associate's degree in automotive repair or a related trade/occupation.
• No specific type or amount of experience is required, though relevant experience is preferred.
• Alternate qualifications:
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or vocational teacher certification in a relevant field.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus four years of recent experience in automotive repair or a related trade, including six months of experience training others.
• Some positions may require state certifications or licenses for the occupation.
• Individuals with felony convictions or pending felony charges will not be hired, per Public Act 140 of 1996.

Training

New hires and returning employees (after more than two years away) will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET), which includes 40 or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on offender contact level and job classification. Additional online training is also required. Overnight travel may be required for NCNET.
