About the Role

The Track & Field Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Coach in organizing and managing all phases of a Division I Track & Field program, including recruiting coordination, fundraising, team travel, strength & conditioning, student-athlete academic monitoring, public speaking, competition scheduling, budget management, and community/donor relations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the academic and personal well-being of student-athletes.
  • Assist in building a nationally competitive Division I program through successful recruiting and retention of high-level student-athletes.
  • Coordinate all recruiting activities.
  • Collaborate with Head Coach, Staff, Athletic Trainers, and Strength & Conditioning Coach to design both academic year (in-season and out-of-season) and summer conditioning programs.
  • Assist with coaching responsibilities which could include Men’s & Women’s Sprints, Hurdles, Relays, Multi Events and/or Distance events.
  • Assist with maintaining the track and field budget.
  • Collaborate with the equipment coordinator for gear purchases.
  • Responsible for team fundraising endeavors.
  • Oversight of reconciliation of expenses and proposing purchases for the sports program.
  • Serve as a liaison to the broader (University) community, engaging in alumni, fundraising, and other key stakeholder activities.
  • Organize community service events for the team.
  • Must be committed to the academic goals of the university and follow the rules and guidelines set forth by the NCAA and the Mountain West Conference.
  • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Successful NCAA or International Coaching experience or Elite International athletic experience.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree & 3 years NCAA/DI track and field coaching experience.

Pay

Anticipated salary: $6,288/monthly - $6,750/monthly.

Employment Conditions

  • Athletic coach appointments are temporary by nature, expire at the end of the term stated, and do not establish any future appointment rights. The position does not qualify for or lead to tenure but may be extended on an annual basis.
  • The work for this faculty position is located in the State of California and requires commuting to the campus.
  • Employment is contingent upon US residence and proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Satisfactory completion of background and reference checks (including criminal records and prior employment) are required. SJSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background and reference checks reveal disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
