Assistant Coach Track & Field
Reports to: Athletic Director • Compensation: $19 per hour • Season Dates: February 9 – end of May
About the Role
Bishop O’Dowd High School is a Catholic college-preparatory community, guided by the teachings of Jesus Christ, that educates its diverse student body to build a more just, joyful and sustainable world. The Track & Field Assistant Coach assists with all aspects of the Bishop O’Dowd High School Track & Field program to ensure the highest quality of spiritual, social, physical and intellectual growth for every Track & Field student-athlete. The role integrates the school’s mission and core values into the coaching-learning process.
Responsibilities
- Uphold and model a spiritual and moral code consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and Bishop O’Dowd High School’s charism.
- Assist the Track & Field program and maintain a clear vision reflecting current trends in coaching and skill development.
- Ensure and monitor the implementation of current instructional coaching methods to maximize player development.
- Attend regular coaching staff meetings.
- Assist the Track & Field Head Coach with plans and help develop a master practice and game schedule in consultation with the Director of Athletics.
- Represent the school at league preseason and postseason Track & Field meetings when the Head Coach is not available.
- Regularly attend athletic department events and meetings as required.
- Assist the Head Coach in ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and bylaws from Bishop O’Dowd High School, West Alameda County Conference, North Coast Section, and California Interscholastic Federation.
- Support student-athletes in the college recruitment process.
- Manage the distribution, collection, and organization of all program equipment, uniforms, and related items.
- Create an environment of care and support for student-athletes.
- Serve as a positive role model to student athletes and parents.
- Teach skills through effectively planned practices at a level appropriate for each team member.
- Condition athletes appropriately for activities requiring endurance, strength, and agility.
- Assist in directing the team’s practice and play in matches.
- Teach sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethic, and responsibility to one’s team.
- Prioritize an environment of safety for student athletes.
- Assist in managing equipment.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Playing experience and/or knowledge of Track & Field is required.
- Previous high school or college coaching experience is preferred.
- First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain it.
- NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Certificate or willingness to obtain it.
- Availability during after-school hours and weekends.
- Off-season meetings and duties are also required.
- Experience working with students and colleagues of different backgrounds, races, genders, and ethnicities.
