THCE Senior Biomedical Equipment Technician

About the Role

Within assigned service area, provides Planned Maintenance (PM), safety testing, repairs, calibration, installation, routine and emergency service to general and specialized diagnostic, therapeutic, and support medical equipment, such as anesthesia machines, sterilizers, ventilators, ultrasound, laser, laboratory equipment, and more, as assigned by Clinical Engineering (CE) Manager.

Responsibilities

• Performs PM procedures on multiple types of general and specialized clinical equipment using manufacturer’s recommendations, standards, or code requirements, as well as industry-acceptable processes.
• Services specialized equipment in categories such as anesthesia machines, sterilizers, ventilators, ultrasound, laser, and laboratory analyzers.
• Performs corrective maintenance, including diagnosing problems using thermodynamic, electronic/electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and other sciences; documents results to comply with regulatory and standard requirements.
• Notifies equipment users and Clinical Engineering Management of repair status and delays as necessary.
• Interacts with clinical staff to resolve operational problems in scheduling and completing PM procedures while minimizing interference to hospital departments.
• Determines need for replacement parts and supplies, selects cost-effective sources, and submits properly completed parts requests using established policies.
• Completes corrective and planned maintenance work order documentation per policy.
• Promotes teamwork by keeping others informed, participating in group decision-making, and soliciting feedback on effectiveness as a team member.
• Orders parts and supplies required for emergency service or repair of medical equipment, and recommends test equipment and spare parts to the CE Manager or Lead Technician.
• Provides on-call service coverage after normal business hours on a rotating basis.
• Assists and trains Bio-Medical Equipment Techs I and II as assigned by Clinical Engineering Manager.
• May serve as Lead Bio-Medical Equipment Technician as needed.
• Maintains knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws/regulations, Trinity Health’s Integrity and Compliance Program, and other policies to ensure adherence.
• Provides or coordinates in-service training to clinical/professional staff on medical device operations and safety functions.

Requirements

• Associate of Applied Sciences degree in medical electronics, electronic technology, or related field, including comparable military training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• CBET or CLET certification preferred.
• Five or more years of experience performing corrective and planned maintenance on medical devices and/or clinical equipment.
• Specialized training by manufacturer or third-party in areas such as anesthesia machines, sterilizers, ultrasound, ventilators, laser, or laboratory analyzers.
• High level of proficiency in specialty area.
• Basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
• Working knowledge of basic hand tools and test equipment specific to the field; ability to train others on their use.
• Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, The Joint Commission, EOC, and other regulations pertaining to clinical equipment service and repair.
• Strong customer service and communication skills to interact with hospital personnel and vendors.
• Basic understanding of personal computer operation, including data input and following complex written instructions.

• Ability to operate complex test equipment and analyze information to determine equipment condition.

• Up-to-date understanding of The Joint Commission, NFPA standards, and state/federal regulations.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Physically able to balance, bend, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel, reach, sit, squat, stand, twist, and walk.
• Ability to mentally concentrate amid stress, interruptions, and changing work priorities.
• Must work in hazardous environments, including exposure to electrocution potentials, mechanical energies, bloodborne/airborne pathogens, dust, inclement weather, temperature/humidity changes, radiation, fumes/vapors, sharp instruments/tools, and hazardous liquids.
• Must hear speech, distinguish sounds, and speak clearly.
• Requires near vision, far vision, depth perception, and ability to distinguish colors.
• Sensory ability to distinguish hot/cold, temperature ranges, surfaces, fine motor skills, manual dexterity, and detect odors.
• Must routinely carry or lift up to 50 pounds (50% of the time) and occasionally up to 100 pounds (5% of the time).
• Must frequently push or pull over 100 pounds (20% of the time).
• Ability to adapt to frequently changing work priorities and travel to various Trinity Health facilities.
