About the Role

Within assigned service area, provides Planned Maintenance (PM), safety testing, repairs, calibration, installation, routine and emergency service to general and specialized diagnostic, therapeutic, and support medical equipment, such as anesthesia machines, sterilizers, ventilators, ultrasound, laser, laboratory equipment, etc.

Responsibilities

• Performs PM procedures on multiple types of general and specialized clinical equipment using manufacturer’s recommendations, standards, or code requirements.
• Performs services on specialized equipment in categories such as anesthesia machines, sterilizers, ventilators, ultrasound, laser, and laboratory analyzers.
• Performs corrective maintenance, including diagnosing problems using thermodynamic, electronic/electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and other sciences.
• Documents results of activities to comply with regulatory and standard requirements.
• Notifies equipment users and Clinical Engineering Management of repair status and delays.
• Interacts with clinical staff to resolve operational problems while minimizing interference to hospital departments.
• Determines need for replacement parts and supplies, selects cost-effective sources, and submits parts requests following established policies.
• Completes corrective and planned maintenance work order documentation per policy.
• Promotes teamwork by keeping others informed, participating in group decision-making, and soliciting feedback.
• Continually improves processes by seeking ways to eliminate and reduce waste.
• Orders parts and supplies required for emergency service or repair of medical equipment (based on department guidelines).
• Recommends test equipment and spare parts to the Clinical Engineering Manager or Lead Technician.
• Provides on-call service coverage after normal business hours on a rotating basis.
• Assists and trains Bio-Medical Equipment Techs I and II as assigned.
• May serve as Lead Bio-Medical Equipment Technician as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned or requested by the Clinical Engineering Manager.
• Maintains knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws/regulations, Trinity Health’s Integrity and Compliance Program, and Code of Conduct.

Requirements

• Associate of Applied Sciences degree in medical electronics, electronic technology, or related field (including comparable military training) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• CBET or CLET certification preferred.
• Five or more years of experience performing corrective and planned maintenance on medical devices and/or clinical equipment.
• Specialized training by manufacturer or third-party in areas such as anesthesia machines, sterilizers, ultrasound, ventilators, laser, or laboratory analyzers.
• High level of proficiency in a specialty area.
• Basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
• Working knowledge of basic hand tools and test equipment specific to the field.
• Ability to train others on the use and application of test equipment.
• Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, The Joint Commission, EOC, and other regulations pertaining to clinical equipment service and repair.
• Strong customer service and communication skills to interact with hospital personnel and vendors.
• Ability to follow complex written instructions, perform tasks, and document actions taken.
• Basic understanding of personal computer operation and data input.

Skills

• Ability to operate complex test equipment and analyze information to determine equipment condition.
• Ability to provide or coordinate in-service training on medical device operations and safety functions.
• Ability to maintain an up-to-date understanding of The Joint Commission, NFPA standards, and state/federal regulations.
• Personal presence characterized by honesty, integrity, and the ability to inspire and motivate others.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Must be physically able to balance, bend, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel, reach, sit, squat, stand, twist, and walk.
• Ability to mentally concentrate while subject to stress, interruptions, and changing work priorities.
• Must work in hazardous environments, including exposure to electrocution potentials, mechanical energies, bloodborne/airborne pathogens, dust, inclement weather, temperature/humidity changes, radiation, fumes/vapors, sharp instruments/tools, and hazardous liquids.
• Must be able to hear speech, distinguish sounds, and speak clearly.
• Must have near vision, far vision, depth perception, and color distinction.
• Must possess sensory ability to distinguish hot/cold, surfaces, fine motor skills, manual dexterity, and detect odors.
• Must be able to carry or lift up to 50 pounds routinely and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
• Must be able to push or pull over 100 pounds frequently.
• Ability to adapt to frequently changing work priorities and travel to various Trinity Health facilities.
