About the Role

Within assigned service area, provides Planned Maintenance (PM), safety testing, repairs, calibration, installation, routine and emergency service to general and specialized diagnostic, therapeutic, and support medical equipment, such as anesthesia machines, sterilizers, ventilators, ultrasound, laser, laboratory equipment, etc.

Responsibilities

• Performs PM procedures on multiple types of general and specialized clinical equipment using manufacturer’s recommendations, standards, or code requirements.
• Performs services on specialized equipment in categories such as anesthesia machines, sterilizers, ventilators, ultrasound, laser, and laboratory analyzers.
• Performs corrective maintenance, including diagnosing problems using thermodynamic, electronic/electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and other sciences; documents results to comply with regulatory and standard requirements.
• Notifies equipment users and Clinical Engineering Management of repair status and delays as necessary.
• Interacts with clinical staff to resolve operational problems in scheduling and completing PM procedures while minimizing interference to hospital departments.
• Determines need for replacement parts and supplies, selects cost-effective sources, and submits parts requests using established policies.
• Completes corrective and planned maintenance work order documentation per policy.
• Promotes teamwork by keeping others informed, participating in group decision-making, and soliciting feedback on effectiveness as a team member.
• Continually improves processes by seeking ways to eliminate and reduce waste.
• Orders parts and supplies required for emergency service or repair of radiological and general medical equipment (based on department guidelines).
• Recommends test equipment and spare parts to the Clinical Engineering Manager or Lead Technician.
• Provides on-call service coverage after normal business hours on a rotating basis.
• Assists and trains Bio-Medical Equipment Techs I and II as assigned.
• May serve as Lead Bio-Medical Equipment Technician as needed.
• Provides or coordinates in-service training to clinical/professional staff on medical device operations and safety functions.
• Performs other duties as assigned or requested by the Clinical Engineering Manager.

Requirements

• Minimum of an Associate of Applied Sciences Degree in medical electronics, electronic technology, or equivalent military-related training.
• CBET or CLET certification preferred.
• Five or more years of experience performing corrective and planned maintenance on medical devices and/or clinical equipment.
• Specialized training by manufacturer or third-party in areas such as anesthesia machines, sterilizers, ultrasound, ventilators, laser, or laboratory analyzers.
• High level of proficiency in a specialty area.
• Basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
• Working knowledge and ability to use basic hand tools and test equipment specific to the field.
• Ability to train others on the use and application of test equipment.
• Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, The Joint Commission, EOC, and other regulations pertaining to clinical equipment service and repair.
• Basic understanding of personal computer operation and ability to input data using a keyboard.
• Ability to follow complex written instructions, perform tasks, and document actions taken.
• Strong customer service and communication skills to interact with hospital personnel and vendors.
• Up-to-date understanding of The Joint Commission, NFPA standards, and state/federal regulations.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Must be physically able to balance, bend, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel, reach, sit, squat, stand, twist, and walk.
• Ability to mentally concentrate while subject to stress, interruptions, and changing work priorities.
• Must work in hazardous environments including electrocution potentials, mechanical energies, bloodborne/airborne pathogens, dust, inclement weather, temperature/humidity changes, radiation, fumes/vapors, sharp instruments/tools, hazardous liquids, and operating devices.
• Must be able to hear speech, distinguish sounds, and speak clearly.
• Must have near vision, far vision, depth perception, and ability to distinguish colors.
• Must possess sensory ability to distinguish hot, cold, temperature ranges, surfaces, fine motor skills, manual dexterity, and detect/distinguish odors.
• Must be able to carry or lift up to 50 pounds routinely (50% of the time) and up to 100 pounds occasionally (5% of the time).
• Must be able to push or pull over 100 pounds frequently (20% of the time).
• Ability to adapt to frequently changing work priorities and travel to various Trinity Health facilities.

Pay

Pay Range: $37.06–$55.60 per hour. Actual compensation will vary based on experience, qualifications, education, location, licensure, certification, and comparisons to colleagues in similar roles.
