About the Role
The NMSU Library is seeking a reliable, self-motivated Library Service Assistant to join our night-shift team. This position provides critical guidance to library patrons, manages circulation desks, and ensures smooth late-night operations. Operating with minimal supervision, you will oversee routine tasks, utilize automated library databases, and help maintain our collections. This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in an independent work environment, possess excellent customer service skills, and prefer late-night working hours.
Responsibilities
- Patron Support: Assist visitors with general and specific inquiries regarding library resources, services, and facility layouts.
- Circulation Desk Operations: Staff public service desks, process library materials check-ins/check-outs, and navigate automated database systems.
- Policy Communication: Clearly explain and enforce library policies regarding unit services, operations, and safety activities to patrons.
- Collection Maintenance: Support ongoing collection care, inventory organization, shelving, and special unit projects.
- Student Leadership: Lead, train, and guide student employees, manage student work schedules, and ensure compliance with established procedures.
- General Support: Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned to support the night-shift operation.
Requirements
- High School diploma or higher degree.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
- Comfort using computer databases and automated software.
- Leadership potential to train and guide student workers.
- High reliability and commitment to the late-night schedule.
Working Conditions
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
- No or very limited physical effort required.
- Lifting requirements: Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking.
- No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
Pay
Target hourly rate: $15.45
Schedule
- Part-time, graveyard shift.
- Full-time equivalency: 0.74 maximum.
