Position Summary

The Library Assistant participates in reference services, LibGuide creation and maintenance, library instruction, and other duties as assigned. The position reports to the Reference Coordinator and Instruction Librarian.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide individual reference service and group information literacy instruction, both in-person and online. Reference services are available in-person and via phone, email, text, chat, and appointment.
  • In support of reference services, collaborate with the Reference Coordinator.
  • Participate in the ongoing development and maintenance of the library’s web services, including the LibGuides and FAQs, using various applications, including LibApps, PowerPoint, Camtasia, Snagit, Zoom, and related software.
  • Sought out and implemented appropriate emerging technologies.
  • Maintain knowledge of current professional library practices, including reference interviewing and teaching practices. May be involved with collection development activities, including selection, weeding, assessment, and promotion.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have completed 9 credit hours of their MLS/MIS/MLIS Degree from an ALA-accredited college or university.
  • Willingness and ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and other patrons with varying skill levels, interest levels, and different lived experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including proficiency with English.
  • Able to perform highly detailed work.
  • Able to use Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Able to troubleshoot routine issues with technology.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Knowledge of academic library operations, including reference services.
  • Knowledge of and ability to learn web and media design tools, softwares, and systems, including discovery search systems, Springshare products, Zoom, and Canva.
