About the role
This is a temporary, entry-level position teaching, instructing, and leading youth development and recreational activities, events, and programs for the City’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs (PRCA) facilities, specifically within the Youth Services and Education Programs Division. The role focuses on leading out-of-school time and enrichment programs for youth from preschool to age 24 in a safe and structured environment. Positions report to a designated supervisor and work under close supervision.
Responsibilities
- Assist in leading and monitoring summer camp activities and functions for children ages 5 through 18.
- Assist with developing and implementing summer camp activities and programs.
- Develop and teach educational programs for various age groups at the assigned facility.
- Ensure the care and safety of children/adults in recreation programs, enforcing safety and operating procedures, including compliance with health, safety, and building codes.
- Administer CPR/first aid (according to training level) in case of injury and report all injuries to the supervisor; complete accident reports as required.
- Distribute and collect equipment for games and activities, ensuring equipment is clean, safe, and in proper working condition.
- Report damaged or unsafe equipment or required maintenance to the supervisor.
- Perform related clerical work, such as copying, answering telephones, providing information on center activities, and recording center attendance.
- Attend work on a continuous and regular basis.
- May supervise and monitor activities of contracted workers or temporary employees.
- May transport children or staff as necessary.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum age of 16 years or a high school graduate (or equivalent diploma).
- At least six months of experience volunteering, teaching, leading, or instructing children in an organized recreational or childcare setting, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Temporary Recreation Assistants assigned to a Teen Camp must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to pass a Department of Children and Families (DCF) background check upon hire and as requested.
- Depending on assignment, may need to complete a Counselor in Training program.
- American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in Adult, Child, and Infant CPR, AED, and First Aid is required upon appointment.
- If assigned to a DCF Licensed Program:
- Must complete the DCF 40-hour Introductory Child Care Training within 15 months of hire, take additional specialized DCF training courses, or have an education exemption.
- Must complete annual in-service trainings.
- Depending on assignment, a valid Florida driver's license may be required.

- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with persons of varying ages and abilities.
- Ability to read and understand work schedules.
- Ability to work effectively with participants, the general public, and other employees to secure confidence and cooperation.
- Ability to plan, assign, and coordinate the work of contract and temporary employees in recreational activities.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Physical strength and agility to safely perform all essential job functions, including lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Must conform to grooming and dress codes (uniforms furnished).
- Ability to work safely with hazardous chemicals, including household cleaning and maintenance chemicals.
- Work may require performing tasks outdoors under varying environmental conditions, including heat, humidity, and exposure to biting insects/invertebrates.
