Salary: $47,424 - $71,120. Position is full-time (permanent) and located at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Employees assigned to this location may be eligible for a bi-weekly commuting allowance of $180.00. This position is part of the Hiring Incentive Program, offering a $1,500 hiring incentive (not available to current City employees, subject to fund availability).

About the role

Incumbents in this position receive calls and dispatch emergency response or repair personnel for matters regarding emergency, fire, administrative, and other situations at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.

Responsibilities

  • Dispatch emergency response personnel, including Police, Fire, and EMS.
  • Receive incoming calls, direct callers, and provide information.
  • Determine location and nature of complaints; record and enter details into a computer system for all self-initiated and dispatched calls.
  • Use two-way radio to perform computer-aided dispatch duties.
  • Forward complaints to supervisors or appropriate Airport Police departments, or direct callers to other Airport departments as needed.
  • Request information, validate records, and complete necessary forms.

Requirements

  • One year of recent full-time paid dispatching experience or one year of customer service experience in a call center work environment.
  • Must be available to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • A ten-year background investigation will be conducted in accordance with FAA regulations for positions at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
  • Must obtain and maintain certifications for REJIS (Regional Justice Information System), MULES (Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System), and NCIC (National Crime Information Center) by the end of the working test period.

  • Data Utilization: Ability to perform basic data analysis, including reviewing, classifying, categorizing, prioritizing, and referencing data, statutes, and guidelines. Requires discretion in applying established standards to recognize interactive effects and relationships.
  • Human Interaction: Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and interpretation to coworkers and the public on applying policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations.
  • Equipment Use: Ability to operate, maneuver, and adjust equipment such as computers, two-way radios, multi-line phones, and related materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data, including driver’s license verification, communication report logs, emergency documentation, and operating manuals.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Functional Reasoning: Ability to follow instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form, involving semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria.

Working Conditions

  • Environmental Factors: Work is normally performed in an office environment under generally safe and comfortable conditions. Limited risk of exposure to irate individuals.
  • Physical Requirements: Tasks involve light physical effort, including lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing 12 to 20 pounds. May require extended periods at a keyboard or workstation.
  • Sensory Requirements: Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences in colors, shapes, and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials, and tasks, such as responding to alarms and using radio equipment.

Benefits

  • Hiring incentive of $1,500 (subject to fund availability, not available to current City employees).

Preferences

  • Previous experience as a Dispatcher.
  • Veterans may be eligible for preference points with submission of a DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.
  • City residents may receive preference points on the examination (5 points for residents without other preferences, 1 additional point for residents with other preferences).
