Technical Director - Emergency Preparedness

About the Role

We are looking for a Technical Director at GHD, based in the US East Region. As a Technical Director at GHD, you will not only mentor and guide the team but also take the reins in environmental emergencies, collaborating closely with clients and agencies to ensure effective response and resolution.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and guide the team in environmental emergencies and client relationship management.
  • Collaborate with clients and agencies to ensure effective response and resolution.
  • Lead environmental sampling and monitoring programs.
  • Spearhead regional visibility initiatives.
  • Manage key client and customer relationships.
  • Contribute to a community of practice in a defined area of expertise or consulting.
  • Manage a segment of the organization's data collection and analysis activities.
  • Develop and write materials that are highly visible, such as sensitive press releases or speeches to critical audiences.
  • Manage a significant aspect of environmental impact assessments, such as data analysis, mitigation strategy planning, or report preparation.
  • Manage environmental risk activities aligned with environmental regulations and sustainability initiatives.
  • Ensure business activities and individuals within the area of responsibility adhere to HSE policies, procedures, and mandatory instructions.
  • Evaluate staff capabilities and prioritize development activities.
  • Coach and mentor others to support the development of the organization's talent pool.
  • Set performance objectives for direct reports and hold them accountable for achieving them.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and related guidelines for an important area of responsibility.
  • Manage and report on performance within the department or area of responsibility.
  • Manage and organize logistically complex responses/projects.
  • Develop innovative solutions by integrating and analyzing complex and diverse information sources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in one or more of the following: Environmental emergency response and preparedness, Environmental site assessments and remediation.
  • 7+ years of Project Management Experience.
  • Track record of revenue growth through Business Development activities.
  • Effective communication with other technical professionals, clients, and regulatory officials.
  • Positive attitude, strong interpersonal skills, team player, and a leader.
  • Strong mentorship and coaching skills to assist with the development of junior staff.
  • Strong delegation skills to ensure that emergency projects are staffed and managed appropriately.
  • Willingness to travel up to 60% of the time (mostly local, some regional).
  • Being on-call 24/7/365 and responding to call-outs and requests for technical assistance during non-routine working hours.
  • Strong organizational skills to assist with the day-to-day operations of the business.
  • Experience with emergency preparedness, air monitoring, environmental assessment/sampling, ICS, SCAT, regulatory compliance (PHMSA, EPA, DOT).
  • Experience with railroad, pipeline, and oil & gas-related emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Passionate about environmental stewardship and problem-solving.
  • Proven track record in emergency management, client relationship management, and business development.
  • Knowledgeable in environmental engineering, geology, or related fields.
  • Experience with GHD FIRST services, including emergency preparedness, planning, and drills, environmental/remediation services, incident management/ICS, air monitoring/industrial hygiene, waste management, toxicology/risk assessment, GIS/database, shoreline clean-up assessment technique (SCAT), digital technology/unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) services, construction/construction management services, crisis communication and community engagement, litigation support, and more.
