About the Role

This position assists the Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager with operational, sales, and merchandising objectives by providing outstanding customer service. The role promotes a safe and productive work environment for all Team Members, customers, and vendors, and trains Team Members on policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Work scheduled shifts, including varied hours, days, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
  • Uphold and promote a safe and productive work environment by following and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Support selling initiatives (TEAM):
    • Thank the Customer
    • Engage with the customer and/or pet
    • Advise products or services
    • Make it Memorable
  • Perform a combination of the following duties (95% of the day):
    • Execute assigned basic, promotional, and seasonal merchandising activities.
    • Perform opening/closing procedures.
    • Transport and make deposits to the bank.
    • Assess store conditions and assign duties.
    • Organize and prioritize workflow using the daily planner.
    • Recovery of merchandise.
    • Participate in the freight process.
    • Perform regular and promotional price change activities.
    • Execute Plan-o-gram procedures (merchandising, sets, and resets).
    • Order live goods and store supplies in the absence of the Store Manager or Assistant Store Manager.
    • Resolve customer complaints/issues to ensure a positive experience.
    • Adhere to loss prevention standards and respond to alarm calls.
    • Communicate with Team Members on job functions, responsibilities, and financial goals.
    • Operate cash register/computer and supervise cash handling procedures.
    • Ensure cash drawers and vault are reconciled accurately daily.
    • Assist Team Members on the appropriate application of policies and procedures.
    • Assemble merchandise.
    • Perform janitorial duties.
    • Assist customers with loading purchases.
    • Ensure the safety and well-being of live animals.
    • Sanitize and maintain holding tanks and care for live animals as required.
    • Handle and care for all live animals, including their food, bedding, and habitat.
    • Assist in training new Team Members.
    • Complete all documentation associated with job duties.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Retail experience and/or pet/live animal knowledge is strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to read, write, and count accurately.

Preferred Skills

  • Pet/live animal, pet food, and pet product knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to resolve issues ethically with minimal conflict.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to perform and execute principal responsibilities of Team Members.

Working Conditions

Working environment is favorable, generally indoors with moderate noise. Floors and outdoor lots are typically hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt). Lighting and temperature are adequate. Work shifts vary but are generally no less than 4 hours and may exceed 10 hours.

Physical Requirements

  • Non-sedentary role requiring physical and mental stamina to move throughout the store and outdoor areas quickly and safely.
  • Ability to operate all job-related equipment efficiently, safely, and accurately.
  • Tasks requiring physical and mental ability (with or without reasonable accommodation):
    • Occasionally lift or reach merchandise overhead.
    • Frequently stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, stoop, and climb ladders.
    • Move throughout the store for an entire shift.
    • Safely access all areas of the store, including selling floor, side lot, stock area, and register area.
    • Constantly operate store equipment such as computers and cash registers.
    • Read, write, and count accurately to complete documentation.
    • Utilize strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Process information/merchandise through the point-of-sale system.
    • Handle and be in contact with birds/poultry.
    • Move and transfer live animals, equipment, and merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Successfully complete all required training and certification.
    • Travel as required in support of district needs.
    • Drive or operate a vehicle for business needs.
    • Lift 50+ pounds.
    • Push and pull merchandise up to 2,000 pounds with the assistance of proper material handling equipment (e.g., pallet jack, dolly, or U-boat).
