TEACHER (HIGH SCHOOL-PHYSICAL EDUCATION) (CORRECTIONAL FACILITY)

Teacher (High School - Physical Education) position located at Sierra Conservation Center in Jamestown, Tuolumne County. Main communication for this position will be through email.

About the role

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Correctional Education Program (SCEP) and the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Academic Instruction (SAI), the Physical Education Teacher (coach) works closely with institution staff and inmates to develop and implement a recreation program meeting institutional and inmate needs, and evaluates the program's effectiveness. This position provides planning, organization, and supervision of the Recreation/Physical Education Program of the Institution.

• Develop a course outline for the program, including specific recreational activities inmates may engage in on a monthly basis.
• Devote the major portion of time to individual and group instruction of inmates, covering a wide variety of recreational rules and regulations.
• Provide instruction to small and large groups while supervising inmate activities in the gymnasium or outdoor recreational area.
• Establish realistic goals and activities based on inmate needs and interests using inmate input, with the goal of self-directed learning.
• Plan, assign, and supervise work; maintain control and discipline; control all material and equipment.
• Prepare instruction and participate in program evaluations.
• Prevent escapes and injury to inmates or others, or damage to property.
• Inspect premises and search students for contraband.
• Conduct fitness testing.
• Perform ancillary duties as required.

Individuals eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered.

Working Conditions

Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) is located in the foothills near Jamestown, California, adjacent to the Stanislaus National Forest. The area offers pine trees, mountain streams, and recreational activities such as fishing, swimming, camping, skiing, and golfing. The prison is approximately 70 miles from Yosemite National Park.

The primary mission of SCC is to provide housing, programs, and services for minimum and medium custody incarcerated individuals to aid in their rehabilitation. SCC is responsible for training and placement of male incarcerated individuals in the Conservation Camp Program and administers male camps throughout California.

Requirements

• Possession of minimum qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If meeting qualifications with education, unofficial transcripts/diploma must be included for verification. Official transcripts may be required upon appointment.
• Applicants with foreign degrees/transcripts must obtain and submit verification of U.S. course/degree equivalency.
• Candidates new to CDCR/CCHCS must submit to a background investigation, Live Scan Fingerprinting, and a Tuberculosis test/evaluation prior to appointment, followed by annual testing thereafter.

Pay

$6,387.52 - $12,847.82 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Schedule

Permanent, full-time position. Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) requires each full-time employee to receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 30, 2027.
