About the role
The Tax Managing Director advises clients on tax implications, evaluates alternative actions, identifies compliance methods, and acts as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. This role involves direct supervision, marketing, and networking, as well as maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance: Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures self and client service teams comply with Firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
- Research: Identifies research needs, frames issues, and reports analyses. Identifies complex issues and provides research methodologies.
- Tax Accruals: Applies Firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual to correctly and proactively apply FAS 109 and FIN 48. Reviews and applies income tax provisions efficiently.
- Tax Consulting: Assists in developing and implementing methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing taxes. Applies expert knowledge of tax specialties and recommends solutions.
- Tax Specialization: Develops in-depth understanding of one or more areas of taxation, such as international, SALT, estate planning, and others. Uses expertise to advise clients and recommend alternative courses of action.
- Strategy Development: Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client positions, the Firm, or Firm personnel. May present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
- Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises associates, senior associates, and managers. Reviews work, provides feedback, schedules workload, and acts as a career advisor.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics, or a Master's in Accountancy or Taxation.
- At least ten (10) years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties.
- Prior supervisory experience.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (or equivalent).

- Expertise in areas such as international tax, valuation allowance credits, business combinations, and stock-based compensation.
- Ability to recognize and communicate potential risks and changes in tax policy.
- Knowledge of multiple tax specialties.
