About the role

The Employment Development Department (EDD), Tax Branch, Field Audit and Compliance Division is seeking an experienced, enterprising, and adaptable Tax Administrator I to supervise, plan, organize, and direct an audit crew in the San Jose Area Audit Office. This position is headquartered in San Jose, CA, and may be eligible for limited hybrid telework, subject to business needs and California Government Code Section 14200 (employees must reside in California to telecommute).

The Tax Administrator I will oversee payroll tax audits, compliance activities, customer service, team leadership, petitions and hearings, outreach, and audit lead development. This role reports to a Tax Administrator II and promotes team building, open communication, and cohesive relations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, plan, organize, and direct an audit crew conducting payroll tax audits and compliance activities.
  • Provide leadership to promote team building, open communication, and cohesive relations.
  • Address petitions, hearings, and outreach activities.
  • Oversee audit lead development.
  • Report to the assigned headquarters office as needed (travel expenses are the employee’s responsibility).

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated in the Tax Administrator I Classification Specification. The Tax Administrator I exam is a Departmental Promotional exam for EDD employees only. List eligibility is required for hire unless already held (expiration may require retaking the exam).

Pay

$8,109.00 - $10,583.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or alternate range.

Effective July 1, 2025, a salary reduction of 2% - 4.62% applies in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) for specific Bargaining Units and Excluded State employees. More details.

  • Work Week: Monday - Friday
  • Job Type: Permanent, Full Time
  • Telework: Hybrid (amount at department discretion, subject to change).
