About the role

The role of the OR Tech III is to assist the OR team in the care of patients, equipment, and supplies. The OR Tech III provides care for adolescent patients between 12 to 17 years of age; adult patients between 18 to 64 years; and geriatric patients 65 years and older.

The surgical technologist in the first scrub role handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. The OR Tech III understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. They have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and are constantly vigilant for maintenance of the sterile field.

When the OR Tech III is in the second scrub role, they assist the surgeon and/or surgical assistant during the operative procedure by carrying out tasks including sponging, suctioning, cutting suture, holding retractors, and manipulating the endoscopic camera.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the OR team in patient care, equipment, and supply management.
  • Handle instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures as the first scrub.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and maintain a sterile field.
  • Perform tasks such as sponging, suctioning, cutting suture, holding retractors, and manipulating the endoscopic camera in the second scrub role.
  • Lead in specialty areas: Robotic, Total Joints, Neuro/Spine, Burn, and Vascular Surgery.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Surgical Technician program or Surgical Technician training with evidence of experience in the past three years, or a licensed healthcare provider with 1 year of operating room experience.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required upon hire.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association or American Red Cross required upon hire.
  • Two years of prior experience in a similar size facility with similar services provided.
  • Must be competent to perform as lead in specialty areas: Robotic, Total Joints, Neuro/Spine, Burn, and Vascular Surgery.
