About the role

Join our Operating Room team at Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown as a Surgical Technician. Per diems are required to work 1 major and 2 minor holidays per year and 4 weekend days (Saturday or Sunday) per 3-month period. Major holidays include Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day; minor holidays are two additional days as needed by the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with healthcare team members, including physicians, to deliver quality, safe, and efficient care.
• Apply expertise in aseptic technique, human anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools to facilitate physician performance.
• Create and maintain a sterile environment.
• Handle, care for, and pass surgical instruments and equipment to surgeons during procedures.
• Manage instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary for surgical procedures.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgeon with a thorough understanding of the procedure.
• Ensure quality patient care and vigilantly maintain the sterile field.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
• Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or an Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School (ABHES)-accredited Surgical Technology Program, or a military surgical technology program (required).
• Fifteen (15) hours of continuing education annually to remain qualified (required).
• 1-3 years of experience as a surgical technologist in a hospital or healthcare setting (preferred); new graduates will be considered.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (required).
• Current and active BLS certification (required).

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking.
• Lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring patients.
• Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
• Full anatomical range of motion to accomplish tasks.
• Visual and aural acuity, finger and hand dexterity to operate equipment.
• Ability to withstand long periods of sitting, standing, and/or constant walking.
• Ability to lift 10 lbs.

Working Conditions

• Works in a clean, well-lighted, heated, or ventilated facility; no routine exposure to hazards.
• Subject to irregular hours, including evenings or weekends, for operational or community events.
• Contact with patients under varied circumstances; may be exposed to unpleasant odors.
• Handles emergency or crisis situations; subject to varying and unpredictable situations.

Pay

The hourly range for this role is $33.55 - $40.00. The range complies with New York State law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements and does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differentials, or other compensation. Factors such as location, specialty, service line, experience, education, credentials, budget, and internal equity may influence compensation.
