About the role

Join our Operating Room team at Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown as a Surgical Technician. Per diems are required to work 1 major and 2 minor holidays per year, plus 4 weekend days (Saturday or Sunday) per 3-month period. Major holidays include Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day; minor holidays are assigned as needed by the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with healthcare team members, including physicians, to deliver quality, safe, and efficient care.
  • Apply expertise in aseptic technique, human anatomy, and surgical procedures to facilitate physician performance.
  • Create and maintain a sterile environment during surgical procedures.
  • Handle, care for, and pass surgical instruments and equipment to surgeons and assistants.
  • Manage instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgery.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon with a thorough understanding of the procedure.
  • Ensure quality patient care and vigilantly maintain the sterile field.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or an Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School (ABHES)-accredited Surgical Technology Program, or a military surgical technology program.
  • Completion of fifteen (15) hours of continuing education annually to remain qualified.
  • 1-3 years of experience as a surgical technologist in a hospital or healthcare setting preferred; new graduates will be considered.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) required.
  • Current and active BLS certification required.

  • Prolonged standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Ability to lift, position, push, and transfer patients.
  • Full anatomical range of motion to accomplish tasks.
  • Visual and aural acuity, finger and hand dexterity to operate equipment.
  • Ability to withstand long periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
  • Strong collaborative and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, organize, synthesize information, and prioritize tasks.
  • Critical thinking, analytical skills, and flexibility.
  • Ability to multitask and maintain detailed attention in an interruptive environment.
  • Sensitivity to customer needs and expectations.

Working Conditions

  • Works in a clean, well-lit, heated, or ventilated facility with no routine exposure to hazards.
  • May be subject to irregular hours, including evenings or weekends, for operational or community events.
  • Contact with patients under varied circumstances, including exposure to unpleasant odors.
  • Subject to unpredictable situations and emergency or crisis scenarios.

Pay

The hourly range for this role is $33.55 - $40.00. The range reflects compliance with New York State law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements and does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits. Compensation is determined based on factors such as location, specialty, service line, years of relevant experience, education, credentials, negotiated contracts, budget, and internal equity.
