An externship designed to prepare students to transition into a Surgical Technician role upon completion of the Surgical Technologist program at MVCC.
Responsibilities
- Assists in providing a clean, safe, and efficient operating room conducive to optimal patient care.
- Utilizes aseptic surgical techniques in the preparation of materials, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures, including:
- Assistance with gowning and gloving.
- Preparation and draping of the surgical area.
- Provision of a sterile field, instruments, suture, and related materials.
- Anticipation of the Surgeons' needs; passing instruments and/or supplies.
- Holding retractors, observing and reporting possible breaks in aseptic technique.
- Assisting in maintaining a sterile, dry, and unobstructed field.
- Acts as a scrub assistant for surgical procedures and obtains/maintains basic knowledge of a variety of procedures.
- Assists with the disinfection, safety, and efficiency of the operating room and the unit.
- Sets up the operating room for each case, including:
- Moving equipment (e.g., tables, cameras, microscopes, fracture table, and instrument pans).
- Operating various types of equipment used during procedures.
- Returning equipment post-procedure.
- Assists in maintaining accurate instrument/sponge counts.
- Transports patients, equipment, and supplies.
- Immediately notifies appropriate staff of emergent patient care situations or equipment supply issues.
- Maintains specialty carts or items, ensuring completeness and availability, including:
- Checking the working condition of equipment and sterility.
- Sending damaged items out for repair.
- Assists with patient positioning and transporting duties, requiring lifting and pushing/pulling while utilizing proper technique.
- Adheres to the Infection Control program to prevent the spread of infections, including:
- Practicing standard precautions.
- Protecting self, peers, patients, and visitors from infection.
- Using appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma.
- Current enrollment and good standing in the MVCC Surgical Technologist program, with completion of the first and second cohort of the program.
- BLS certification.
Skills
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Basic computer proficiency.
Pay
$18.00 per hour.
Schedule
- Variable shifts, including weekends and/or holidays.
- Occasional, non-union, 8-hour shifts.
- 0.2 FTE (approximately 8 hours per week).
