Location: Sheboygan, Wisconsin | Duration: 13 weeks | Shift: 12-hour evening (1800–0600), 36 hours per week
About the Role
This position supports a 131-bed Level IV Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with a focus on labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum (LDRP) care. The unit includes 12 LDRP beds, 2 triage rooms, 2 operating rooms, and a 10-bed Level II NICU, averaging 60–80 births per month.
Responsibilities
- RN Responsibilities:
- Perform cervical exams, amnio infusions, epidurals, fetal monitoring, IV starts/management, Pitocin administration
- Assist with baby delivery and receiving, APGAR scoring, and basic breastfeeding education
- Provide comprehensive post-partum care for mother and baby from transition to discharge
- Manage patient ratios: 1:1 for laboring patients, 1:2 for active labor, 1:3 for couplets
- Surgical Technologist Responsibilities:
- Assist with c-sections, vaginal deliveries, and occasional OBGYN surgeries (e.g., tubal ligation)
- Perform CNA-type tasks: stocking rooms, assisting patients with ADLs
- Maintain aseptic surgical technique and prepare materials, supplies, and equipment for surgery
- Soft skills: Basic computer proficiency, strong customer service, and interpersonal skills
Requirements
- RN:
- 2+ years of LDRP experience
- BLS, NRP, and intermediate/advanced fetal monitoring certification
- Surgical Technologist:
- 2+ years of surgical tech experience, competent with c-sections and OB procedures
- BLS certification (CST not required)
- First-time travelers accepted
Patient Care Details
- Patient types: 32+ weeks gestation, primarily lower-risk pregnancies
- Common diagnoses: Hypertension, magnesium administration, substance abuse medication management, epidurals, elevated BMI, diabetes
- Post-delivery care: Mother and baby remain in the same room with continued RN care
- Preferred experience: Post-women’s surgeries
Department Support
- 2 surgical techs, HUC (no charge nurse; RNs may take patients)
- Phlebotomy, L&D anesthesia (always on call), NNP (24/7), OBGYNs (on call, not always on unit)
- Respiratory therapy (24/7), hospitalist (24/7), lactation consultant (daytime)
- Management available during the day
Technology & Equipment
- EMR: Epic (preferred for RNs)
- IV Pump: Alaris
- Medication dispensing: Pyxis
- Monitors: QS Centricity
Schedule & Logistics
- Shift times: 0645–1915 or 1845–0715
- Weekend rotation: Every 4th weekend
- On-call requirements: Yes (six 12-hour shifts per six weeks, including call-back)
- Holiday requirements: Yes (rotating coverage)
- PTO: Approval for requests 7+ days in advance
- Orientation: 1–2 days (NEO + unit orientation, based on comfort level)
- Scheduling: Lead RN creates 6-week schedules, released 2 weeks prior
