Supervisory Pharmacist (Clinical)

This position provides oversight and strategic direction for pharmacy operations at the Pine Ridge Service Unit, including clinical care, staff management, and regulatory compliance in support of the Indian Health Service (IHS) mission.

A REAL ID-compliant identification will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

Responsibilities

  • Directs day-to-day operations of the pharmacy program, including staffing, scheduling, policy implementation, and compliance.
  • Ensures compliance with all accreditation standards, maintains documentation, coordinates audits, and implements risk reduction strategies to ensure patient safety.
  • Manages performance appraisals, establishes individual development plans, and provides coaching, feedback, and training for a diverse staff of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
  • Serves as a medication subject matter expert for physicians, nurses, and other staff on drug-related issues, monitors adverse drug reactions, and evaluates drug literature.
  • Participates in medication reconciliation processes, interdisciplinary team rounds, and collaborative treatment planning.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Confidential Financial Disclosure Form required.
  • Must comply with the IHS Employee Immunization Policy for vaccine-preventable diseases, with possible exemptions as outlined in the policy.
  • Must obtain and maintain required licensure; failure to do so may result in adverse actions, including removal from Federal service.
  • Works on a rotational basis to provide continuity of pharmacy services during days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Direct deposit is required for payment.
  • Must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation; continued employment is contingent on a favorable outcome.
  • Subject to a credit check as part of the background investigation process.
  • Must present two valid forms of identification prior to appointment, including a REAL ID-compliant state-issued ID or driver's license if applicable.
  • This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children; candidates must not have been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere to certain crimes.
  • A one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period may be required.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the position.

  • Education: A doctoral degree in Pharmacy recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Licensure: Must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Experience: Must demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for pharmacy work, including:
    • Dispensing medications and providing information on usage and side effects.
    • Evaluating medication use patterns and outcomes.
    • Performing administrative, consultative, or advisory work for pharmacy programs.
    • Planning, monitoring, and evaluating medication programs or regimens.
    • Establishing medication-handling procedures.
    • Researching medical literature or clinical medication information.
    • Maintaining medication records required by law.
  • Medical Requirements: Must be able to distinguish basic colors.
  • Minimum Qualifications (GS-13): At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service, including:
    • Directing inpatient and outpatient pharmacy operations.
    • Planning and assigning work, evaluating performance, managing schedules, and conducting hiring.
    • Applying concepts, principles, and practices of clinical pharmacology and drug distribution systems.
    • Selecting, compounding, dispensing, and preserving drugs, and providing advice on complex drug-related problems.

Education

This position has an education requirement. You are strongly encouraged to submit a copy of your transcripts or a list of courses including titles, credit hours completed, and grades. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted in the application package; official transcripts will be required prior to receiving an official offer. Only education from schools accredited by institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education may be credited. For foreign education, a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency must be provided with your transcript.
