About the Role

Serve as a Battalion Chief within the Fire and Emergency Services Division at Redstone Arsenal, AL. Provide comprehensive fire and emergency services including structural fire protection, brush firefighting, aircraft rescue and firefighting operations, fire prevention services, hazardous material responses, basic life support (BLS), and CBRNE response.

Supervise and provide technical staff assistance to the operations of the Fire and Emergency Services Division. Command shift personnel in fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, training activities, fire prevention, and preplanning.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage fire suppression, emergency medical services, and rescue operations.
  • Provide technical staff assistance to the Fire and Emergency Services Division.
  • Oversee training activities, fire prevention, and preplanning efforts.
  • Respond to hazardous material incidents and CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive) events.
  • Supervise shift personnel and ensure compliance with operational protocols.
  • Participate in the department’s wellness program, including a structured physical exercise regimen.
  • Wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License and appropriate government driver’s license for operating vehicles.
  • Obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Pass the record Physical Ability Test (PAT) upon hiring and annually thereafter.
  • Pass a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Fit Test.
  • Perform Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel up to 10% of the time.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, including a completed background investigation.
  • Must complete pre-employment and periodic medical examinations to ensure physical health and ability to perform duties.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. regularly as part of job duties.
  • Compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs; subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Designated as Mission Essential; required to report to work during severe weather or emergencies.
  • Shift work required, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Rotating 48-hour shifts with 144 hours per pay period.
  • Must possess or obtain a valid state Driver’s License from one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Must pass the Physical Ability Test (PAT) upon hiring and annually thereafter.
  • Must pass a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Fit Test.
  • Must participate in the department’s wellness program, including a structured physical exercise program.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: U.S. Citizens

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, including:

  • Structural fire protection, wildland firefighting, aircraft rescue and firefighting operations, fire prevention services, hazardous material responses, emergency medical services, and CBRNE response.
  • Leading and providing technical staff assistance to the operations of the Fire and Emergency Services Division, including supervising shift personnel in daily operations.

Selective Placement Factors: Must possess the following certifications (attach copies for verification):

  • Airport Firefighter (DoD, IFSAC, or PRO-Board certified)
  • Hazmat Incident Commander (DoD, IFSAC, or PRO-Board certified)
  • Fire Officer II (DoD, IFSAC, or PRO-Board certified)
  • Fire Instructor I (DoD, IFSAC, or PRO-Board certified)
  • Fire Inspector I (DoD, IFSAC, or PRO-Board certified) or an accredited First Responder Inspector certification (NFPA Standard 1030, 2024 Edition)
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification or state EMT license from a state with National Registry reciprocity.

Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement. Salary negotiations may be authorized for candidates new to Federal service.
