Serve as a technical advisor to the Director of Emergency Services, Garrison Commander, and Command Group officials at Fort Detrick—a vibrant community offering premier on-post perks such as modern housing, robust MWR recreation and fitness programs, hassle-free RV parking, and trusted on-site pet kenneling.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the installation’s Fire and Emergency Services program, including fire prevention, suppression, emergency response, and fire-protection activities.
  • Lead the Fire and Emergency Services workforce by overseeing staffing, performance, and training requirements.
  • Manage the Fire and Emergency Services budget, including planning, programming, budgeting, and executing funds.
  • Direct subordinate supervisors, employees, and staff for a fire department.
  • Budget for project requirements such as equipment acquisition, travel, training, and contracts.
  • Manage complex incidents, including incident command, unified command, area command, and emergency operation centers.
  • Plan major emergency response and contingency plans.
  • Participate in the Division Wellness Programs (annual physical evaluation and on-the-spot drug testing).
  • Serve on 24-hour rotating shifts (120 hours per pay period) with coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Respond to immediate recall and extended shifts during emergencies.

Requirements

  • Appointment subject to a suitability or fitness determination via a completed background investigation.
  • Pre-employment and periodic medical examinations required per DoDM 6055.06 to ensure physical ability to perform duties.
  • Must lift up to 45 lbs. regularly.
  • Compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug-Free Workplace Programs; pre-employment and random drug testing required.
  • Designated as Mission Essential; must report to work during severe weather or emergencies.
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance; background investigation and credit check required.
  • Must maintain a valid Government Driver’s License.
  • Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • Supervisory position with a one-year probationary period to assess supervisory duties (unless previously completed).
  • Maximum Entry Age (MEA) for Firefighters is 37; rehiring past MEA permitted if able to complete 20 years of covered service by mandatory retirement age (57 for firefighters).

Qualifications

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level, including:

  • Directing subordinate supervisors, employees, and staff for a fire department.
  • Budgeting for equipment acquisition, travel, training, and contracts.
  • Managing complex incidents (incident command, unified command, area command, emergency operation centers).
  • Planning major emergency response and contingency plans.

Certifications

Must possess the following certifications (certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, IFSAC, or PRO-Board per DoD 6055.06-M; attach copies for verification):

  • Fire Officer IV
  • Fire Instructor II
  • Fire Inspector II (or accredited First Responder Inspector certification per NFPA Standard 1030, 2024 Edition)
  • Hazardous Material Technician
  • Hazardous Material Incident Commander
