Supervisory Audiologist

Duties

• Assists in planning, assessing, and evaluating programs to ensure proper coordination between healthcare delivery within the section and the overall delivery of health care.
• Makes decisions with wide latitude of control and independent judgment.
• Exercises supervisory responsibilities such as planning and scheduling work, assigning work to employees, accepting, amending or rejecting completed work, assuring that production and accuracy requirements are met, appraising performance and recommending performance standards and ratings, assigning delineated clinical privileges, approving leave, and effecting disciplinary measures.
• Aids in training and orientation of new staff.
• Uses and shares knowledge of contemporary audiology practice.
• Communicates assignments, projects, problems to be solved, actionable events, and objectives, as well as advises on work methods, practices, and procedures.
• Evaluates program quality to ensure that methods, deadlines, and quality have been met.
• Aids in serving as facilitator and/or negotiator and coordinating initiatives and consensus building activities among clinical team members.
• Clinically conducts, plans, and coordinates clinical and administrative aspects of a full range of services associated with contemporary audiology practice.
• Conducts comprehensive hearing testing, hearing aid prescription and management, and Compensation and Pension hearing examinations.
• Assesses patient conditions from examination, observation, and consultation with other members of an interdisciplinary health care team.
• Selects, administers, and interprets diagnostic tests necessary to detect and evaluate the presence of a hearing disorder.
• Develops an appropriate plan of care and delivers treatment as designed and consistent with principles of evidence-based practice.
• Documents evaluation and treatment actions and outcomes in appropriate formats in a timely manner, in accordance with facility policy, and completes all related patient care tasks.
• Reports findings to Veterans and their families and to professional colleagues.
• Provides patient and family education including informed consent.
• Optimizes clinical safety and efficiency by maintaining supplies and equipment in good working order.
• Serves as a consultant to other facility personnel involving the most difficult and complex cases and is a recognized subject matter expert on matters related to audiology and hearing disorders.
• Maintains current with new developments in audiology and engages in continuing education activities and professional learning experiences.
• Communicates with other professionals in audiology and related professions.
• Attends staff meetings and inter-disciplinary health care team meetings as appropriate, reviews policies and procedures, and attends in-service training.
• May participate in research activities pertinent to audiology.
• May perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of the work is not substantial.

Qualifications

• Must meet at least one of the following requirements:
• Doctor of Audiology (AUD) from an audiology program recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) or Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
• Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the USDE.
• Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
• Must meet the following grade requirements for the Supervisory Audiologist - GS-13:
• Experience: At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at least one year comparable to the next lower grade level.
• Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the KSAs required at the full performance level, the following KSAs are required:
  • Skill in conflict resolution to facilitate positive working relationships between employees, team leaders, and managers.
  • Skill in applying evidence-based practices in a professional area.
  • Ability to analyze organizational and operational challenges to develop and implement solutions.
  • Ability to develop the abilities and strengths of current employees.
  • Ability to balance responsibilities, set priorities, and delegate tasks to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to analyze data to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity within the section.
• Preferred Experience: Minimum 5 years as a licensed Audiologist, documented experience precepting/mentoring graduate students in audiology, documented experience in leadership and/or management role(s).
