Supervisor Nurse (Med/Surg)

This position is located in the Division of Nursing Services, Medical/Surgical Unit/3West at Gallup Indian Medical Center, Gallup, NM. The role is responsible for supervision, managing, directing, coordinating, leadership, and evaluating the provision of nursing care on the Medical/Surgical Unit/3West. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

About the Role

Functions as the Supervisory Nurse with 24-hour responsibility for nursing services and nursing care in the Inpatient/Medical/Surgical Unit. Responsibilities include:

• Planning work for the unit and adjusting work schedules to meet staffing and patient care needs.
• Implementing personnel management procedures, including training, career development, grievance procedures, safety practices, and orientation for each employee.
• Recommending and initiating personnel actions such as performance awards and disciplinary actions.
• Collaborating with other nursing leaders to meet Division of Nursing, hospital, and Federal initiatives and goals.

Responsibilities

• Administer, coordinate, and direct clinical nursing activities.
• Provide supervision of an inpatient nursing unit, develop work schedules, and assign tasks to subordinates.
• Manage employee performance and identify the need for unit-specific policies to guide medical nursing practice.
• Monitor healthcare services to ensure quality care in accordance with medical, nursing guidelines, and accreditation requirements.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
• This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. The agency must ensure that persons hired have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.
• A one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.

• Subject to Employee Health Policies related to Measles, Rubella, and seasonal influenza immunizations. Vaccine exemption requests may be available.
• The selected individual must obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

• A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. The program must be accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• For individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools, official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required.
• Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination and possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Minimum Qualifications (GS-12)

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service, performing the following:

• Administering, coordinating, and directing clinical nursing activities.
• Providing supervision of an inpatient nursing unit, developing work schedules, and assigning tasks to subordinates.
• Managing employee performance and identifying the need for unit-specific policies to guide medical nursing practice.
• Monitoring healthcare services to ensure quality care in accordance with medical and nursing guidelines and accreditation requirements.
