SUPERVISING PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE

About the role

Under supervision of the Medical Director, the Tuberculosis (TB) Program Supervising Public Health Nurse is the local expert in TB case management and is a liaison to health care providers and facilities about TB screening, diagnostics, treatment, patient monitoring, and case reporting.

Responsibilities

• Oversee TB nurse case management, including direct supervision of four PHN II's, assignment of cases to PHN II's, quality assurance of their work, coverage of patient care (such as medication dispensing and sputa collection) when a PHN II is out of the office, and troubleshooting of individual patient issues
• Expect 10-20% time in the field
• Expect to provide care for individuals with infectious TB (N95 respirators and annual fit testing provided)
• Develop standard operating procedures for TB nurse case management and other program policies and procedures that involve nursing care
• Assist program epidemiologist to promptly intake new case reports from fax, phone, and Illinois Disease Surveillance System (IDSS) reports
• Use data management systems such as IDSS, EDN, and REDCap to ensure prompt entry of case surveillance data and perform periodic reviews of PHN II entries for accuracy and completeness
• Perform periodic inventory of medications and medical supplies and assist the program manager with ordering medications and supplies
• Serve as the TB Program's educational director, which includes assessing the training needs of program members and providing and/or arranging appropriate training
• Develop and give TB-related educational presentations to healthcare and lay audiences
• Maintain excellent communications within the program and department, with external partners, and with the general public
• Work with a culturally diverse patient population and utilize interpreters for non-English language speakers
• Utilize available electronic systems (e.g., MS Office Suite) to correspond with others, schedule meetings, and document activities
• Participate in monthly in-person case conferences, quarterly in-person cohort review meetings, and other quality improvement projects
• Work with CDPH clinical services quality improvement staff to establish clinical performance metrics, report performance data, standardize and improve clinical practices, and promote a culture of quality and transparency
• Assist with large institutional TB exposures, including education of exposed individuals and arranging of mass screening efforts
• Assist with departmental response to public health emergencies as needed and under the direction of CDPH leadership

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor's degree in Nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing or an approved foreign credential evaluation PLUS three (3) years of professional nursing experience, of which one (1) year is in a supervisory/team lead role related to the responsibilities of the position
• OR A Master's degree or higher in Nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing or an approved foreign credential evaluation PLUS two (2) years of professional nursing experience, of which one (1) year is in a supervisory/team lead role related to the responsibilities of the position
• Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse
• Applicants must possess a valid State of Illinois Registered Nurse license at the time of employment
• You must provide your transcripts or diploma at the time of processing

Preferred qualifications

• Previous work experience at a local health department
• Multilingual

Pay & schedule

• Starting Annual Salary: $94,080
• Location: Westside Center for Disease Control, 2160 W. Odgen
• Days: Monday - Friday
• Hours: 8:00AM – 4:00PM
