Summer Legal Intern
About the role
Whitted Takiff LLC seeks to hire an Associate Attorney to attend IEP meetings and advocate on behalf of parents to secure appropriate IEP services for students with disabilities. The role involves drafting due process hearing complaints, litigating due process, disciplinary, and residency matters, and performing legal research and analysis in special education and school law.
Responsibilities
- Attend IEP meetings and advocate on behalf of parents
- Draft due process hearing complaints
- Litigate due process, disciplinary, and residency matters
- Perform legal research and analysis in special education and school law
- Synthesis of legal research findings into written memoranda or legal pleadings
- Manage a client caseload
- Perform due diligence in all necessary tasks related to legal services provided
Requirements
- Illinois licensed attorney with a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
- 3-5 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated commitment to serving individuals with disabilities and/or child advocacy
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- A knowledge of federal and Illinois laws in the areas of education, mental health, guardianship, and juvenile criminal proceedings is preferred
Preferred Experience and Requirements
Candidates should have a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school, 3-5 years of relevant experience, and a demonstrated commitment to serving individuals with disabilities and/or child advocacy. Strong oral and written communication skills are required, along with a knowledge of federal and Illinois laws in the areas of education, mental health, guardianship, and juvenile criminal proceedings.
