Substitute Special Education Teacher
About the role
LEARN Academy, formerly known as Desert Choice Schools, is a certified K–12 Private Day School approved by the Arizona Department of Education to provide Special Education Services for the following disability categories: Autism (A), Emotional Disability (ED), Mild Intellectual Disability (MIID), Moderate Intellectual Disability (MOID), Other Health Impaired (OHI), Specific Learning Disability (SLD), and Speech-Language Impairment (SLI).
LEARN Academy utilizes a highly-structured, school-wide Positive Behavioral Supports program that teaches students Academic, Social/Emotional Problem-Solving and Strategies. All staff are trained in a unique methodology that assists students with maintaining Positive Choice-Making. We are a tight-knit team that values collaboration, integrity and the desire to make a difference in the lives of students who struggle to be successful, and who share a passion to help children and their families.
Responsibilities
- Work with students with emotional and behavioral needs providing therapeutic interventions, de-escalation, pre-crisis and post-crisis interventions as well as instruction in the event the regularly scheduled educator is unable to attend work
- Curriculum and instruction
- Classroom management
- Documentation and maintaining student records when needed
- Follow a school schedule
- Work variable days/hours
- Collaborate and receive feedback, mentoring and direction from peers and supervisors
- Maintain a professional and clinical perspective at all times; able to not internalize or personalize certain student behaviors or mannerisms
- Safely and effectively use Crisis Management Interventions (including the use of therapeutic holds) of all involved (e.g., self, student, other employees)
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Active and valid Substitute or other Education teaching certificate issued by AZ State Department of Education
- Experience working with emotional and/or behaviorally challenged students preferred
- PCMA certified is a plus but not required
