Substitute Special Education Teacher
LEARN Academy, formerly known as Desert Choice Schools, is a certified K-12 Private Day School approved by the Arizona Department of Education to provide Special Education Services for the following disability categories: Autism (A), Emotional Disability (ED), Mild Intellectual Disability (MIID), Moderate Intellectual Disability (MOID), Other Health Impaired (OHI), Specific Learning Disability (SLD), and Speech-Language Impairment (SLI). LEARN Academy utilizes a highly-structured, school-wide Positive Behavioral Supports program that teaches students Academic, Social/Emotional Problem-Solving and Strategies.
About the role
Substitute Teachers will be part of a team that works with students with emotional and behavioral needs, providing therapeutic interventions, de-escalation, pre-crisis and post-crisis interventions, as well as instruction in the event our regularly scheduled educator is unable to attend work. This position is supported by one to three behavior technicians who assist the classroom teacher with classroom management, behavior documentation and reporting, implementing social/emotional/behavioral interventions, as well as participating in teaching and instruction.
Responsibilities
- Deliver curriculum and instruction
- Manage classroom behavior and implement Positive Behavioral Supports
- Maintain student records and documentation as needed
- Follow a school schedule with variable days/hours
- Collaborate and receive feedback, mentoring, and direction from peers and supervisors
- Maintain a professional and clinical perspective at all times, including not internalizing or personalizing student behaviors
- Safely and effectively use Crisis Management Interventions, including therapeutic holds, to ensure the safety of all involved
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Active and valid Substitute or other Education teaching certificate issued by AZ State Department of Education
- Experience working with emotional and/or behaviorally challenged students preferred
- PCMA certification is a plus but not required
- Must be presently eligible to work in the United States
