Substitute Special Education Teacher

About the role

LEARN Academy, formerly known as Desert Choice Schools, is a certified K-12 Private Day School approved by the Arizona Department of Education to provide Special Education Services for Autism (A), Emotional Disability (ED), Mild Intellectual Disability (MIID), Moderate Intellectual Disability (MOID), Other Health Impaired (OHI), Specific Learning Disability (SLD), and Speech-Language Impairment (SLI). The school utilizes a highly-structured, school-wide Positive Behavioral Supports program that teaches students Academic, Social/Emotional Problem-Solving and Strategies. All teachers and support staff are trained in a methodology that assists students with maintaining Positive Choice-Making.

Substitute Teachers will be part of a team that works with students with emotional and behavioral needs providing therapeutic interventions, de-escalation, pre-crisis and post crisis interventions as well as instruction in the event the regularly scheduled educator is unable to attend work. This position is supported by one to three behavior technicians who assist the classroom teacher with classroom management, behavior documentation and reporting, implementing social/emotional/behavioral interventions as well as participating in teaching and instruction.

Responsibilities

• Provide curriculum and instruction in the absence of the regular educator
• Manage classroom behavior and implement therapeutic interventions
• Maintain documentation and student records as needed
• Follow a school schedule
• Collaborate with peers and supervisors, receiving feedback, mentoring, and direction
• Maintain a professional and clinical perspective at all times, refraining from internalizing or personalizing student behaviors or mannerisms
• Safely and effectively use Crisis Management Interventions, including therapeutic holds

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree required
• Active and valid Substitute or other Education teaching certificate issued by Arizona State Department of Education
• Ability to safely and effectively use Crisis Management Interventions (including therapeutic holds) for self, students, and other employees

Preferred qualifications

• Experience working with emotional and/or behaviorally challenged students
• PCMA certified is a plus but not required
