Substation Utility Manager

About The Opportunity

A growing engineering consulting firm is seeking a Substation Engineering Manager to lead a team delivering utility and power infrastructure projects across North America. This is an opportunity to play a key leadership role within an expanding power delivery practice while remaining technically engaged on complex transmission and substation projects. This is a working manager position, combining technical oversight, team leadership, resource planning, and client relationship management.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of substation engineers supporting utility and power infrastructure projects.
• Manage technical execution to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with client and regulatory requirements.
• Review engineering deliverables and provide technical guidance across multiple concurrent projects.
• Cook up engineering resources across multidisciplinary teams to support successful project execution.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with existing utility and energy clients.
• Support project planning, staffing, scheduling, and engineering quality initiatives.
• Provide technical leadership within one or more disciplines, including Protection & Controls, Substation Physical Design, or SCADA/Communications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Approximately 8–12+ years of experience in substation, transmission, or power delivery engineering.
• Experience leading engineering teams, mentoring staff, or managing complex engineering projects.
• Strong technical background in Protection & Controls (preferred), Substation Physical Design, or SCADA/Communications.
• Experience working within an engineering consulting environment is strongly preferred.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required.
• Familiarity with utility interconnections, renewable energy projects, and power system engineering is a plus.
• Willingness to travel approximately 10–30% for client meetings and project site support.
