Student Manager - Event Operations
Under the supervision of the Coordinator II - Event Management, the student manager for Event Operations oversees a team of 15 to 20 Event Supervisors and Student Assistants and collaborates closely with the University Union leadership team. This role emphasizes personal development, with incumbents assigned additional responsibilities beyond their core program area to broaden their experience. Employees are expected to align with the University Learning Objectives, making ethical decisions, respecting diversity, promoting sustainability, working effectively in teams, and communicating clearly.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, schedule, and manage daily operations for a staff of 15 to 20 student employees.
- Train employees in essential duties, customer service, and risk management.
- Provide staff coaching, discipline, and feedback.
- Participate in leadership development training with the immediate supervisor and student manager leadership team.
- Complete weekly administrative duties, including service requests, developing agendas, and conducting regular staff meetings.
- Abide by and enforce all ASI and campus security regulations regarding confidential and private information.
- Manage internal and external communication outlets effectively.
- Maintain and update area manuals, procedures, and resources for staff accessibility.
- Enforce ASI and staff area policies as necessary.
- Uphold the integrity of the ASI philosophy and brand.
- Produce regular reports, reviews, and assessments of the staff area.
- Demonstrate punctuality and dependability by maintaining a consistent work schedule.
- Serve as an information source for Recreational Sports and ASI programs and services.
- Maintain professionalism in attire, behavior, and language in the workplace.
- Familiarize and comply with emergency response protocols.
- Attend all required meetings, workshops, and retreats.
- Provide quality customer service to staff and customers.
- Maintain a positive work environment through interactions with staff, peers, and superiors.
- Demonstrate effective and efficient resource management.
- Demonstrate competency with specific technological resources used by the staff area.
- Oversee the set-up, takedown, and concurrent management of concerts, club events, and special events.
- Coordinate logistical planning of events for ASI Events.
- Adhere to and enforce all ASI departmental policies and procedures.
- Assist with planning and one-on-one meetings with event organizers as directed.
- Provide general risk management, including observing facility usage and ensuring safety standards are met.
- Track event hours and coordinate with the Assistant Coordinator - Facility Scheduling to invoice and reconcile event costs.
- Act as a liaison between ASI and other campus departments.
- Conduct weekly administrative duties, including scheduling, staff meetings, updates, and coaching with the immediate supervisor.
- Track and maintain area-specific information for quarterly reports and team development.
- Identify and report safety issues or concerns to the Facility Supervisor immediately.
- Provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants, staff, and spectators.
- Work at least one shift per week providing direct program/staff area supervision.
- Perform long-term projects as assigned.
The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units (4 units for graduate students).

Schedule
- Position requires a minimum of two consecutive terms of work availability.
- Night and weekend supervision is necessary.
- May require working late nights, weekends, and holidays.
Pay
- Hourly Starting Rate: $18.90 per hour.
- Maximum of 20 hours per week while attending academic classes.
Benefits
This position is "at will," meaning the employee may resign at any time, and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. ASI will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information or if the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
