About the Role

Under the direct supervision of the Building Principal, Cafeteria Manager, and Program Supervisor, the Student Intern assists with meal serving, food preparation, and cleaning of the cafeteria area and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with arrangement of serving lines and service of food, following menu and portion sizes as provided and meeting meal service standards.
  • Assists with preparation and garnishing of food.
  • Follows proper handling of served and disposed of foods.
  • Lifts and carries food and supply items to workstations.
  • Demonstrates a positive and cheerful manner to all customers.
  • Performs general cleaning, including sweeping and mopping floors in the kitchen and serving line areas and cleaning of equipment, pots, pans, and transport carts.
  • Assists with additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Equipment Used

This position requires the ability to use basic kitchen equipment, utensils, warmers, coolers, and all sizes and types of carts. Must always comply with WPS guidelines for equipment use.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Frequent: Lifting of 10 lbs, carrying up to 25 feet of 10 lbs, bending and twisting at the waist, standing, repetitive handling/grasping and fine finger manipulation, reaching, rotation of head/neck, flexion.
  • Occasional: Lifting of 10-20 lbs, carrying of 20 lbs up to 25 feet, pushing/pulling of 10 lbs up to 50 feet, walking.
  • Limited: Lifting of 20-50 lbs, carrying up to 25 feet of 20-50 lbs, pushing/pulling 10-50 lbs up to 50 feet, climbing/balancing, kneeling, crouching.

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing to exchange information with others inside and outside the organization.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current Wichita Public Schools student in good academic standing as verified by building administration.
  • Must attend a Food Safety Basics class within 6 months of employment.

Work Environment

  • Contact with personnel within the district, customers, and vendors.
  • Works under the direct supervision of the department supervisor to complete day-to-day tasks.
  • Works with a diverse population requiring tact and diplomacy in all situations.
  • Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.

Employee Expectations

  • Employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday unless approved leave is obtained.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position.
