Student Care Coordinator

About the Role

The Student Care Coordinator is part of Student Care Coordination (SCC) in the Student Affairs division at Vanderbilt University. This role involves collaborating with students who may have academic, personal, emotional, medical, or other concerns. The coordinator assesses each student’s needs and connects them with appropriate resources within Vanderbilt’s Student Care Network or the Nashville community. This position requires regular interaction with students, parents, faculty, senior administration, campus partners, and the public.

This is a regular, full-time, benefits-eligible, exempt, on-campus role. This position is not eligible for sponsorship.

About the Work Unit

The Student Care Network (SCN) includes the Center for Student Wellbeing, Student Care Coordination, the University Counseling Center, and the Student Health Center. SCN provides a holistic network of services and resources for all Vanderbilt University students who have paid the Student Health Fee. Staff within SCN work collaboratively to create integrated processes, referrals, and treatment plans.

Student Care Coordination fosters wellbeing and success by identifying concerns and coordinating support for students facing life events that may interfere with their academic and personal goals. It serves as the central point of contact for students to identify needs and determine appropriate resources. The CARE Support and Intervention Team provides crisis intervention, care management, and support for students with elevated concerns or high acuity needs.

Responsibilities

• Complete non-clinical intake and assessment with undergraduate, graduate, and professional students during scheduled appointments and drop-in hours to understand their needs and develop Student Success Plans.
• Provide ongoing case management follow-up with students in person, by phone, or email for continuity of care and accountability.
• Meet individually with students of concern or those with acute needs (and their families, if necessary) to coordinate and provide ongoing care management.
• Consult with Associate Director(s) or Director on acute cases as needed.
• Connect students with appropriate on- and off-campus support services to help them navigate the Student Care Network.
• Work closely with campus partners to facilitate coordinated and holistic support measures for students.
• Build and maintain a network of community providers and resources to make intentional and successful off-campus referrals.
• Support students returning from medical leaves of absence to facilitate their personal and academic success.
• Provide services to a diverse campus community to support mental health, wellness, and skill development.
• Utilize electronic documentation systems to create and update wellbeing files and share information with campus partners.
• Respond to after-hours or weekend emergencies on a limited basis to ensure continuous support for students.

Outreach and Development

• Build relationships with campus partners and act as a resource on matters pertaining to student wellbeing and students of concern.
• Assist in designing programs and facilitating trainings to educate students, faculty, and staff about the Student Care Network, SCC, student wellbeing, and identifying students in distress.
• Engage in professional development to stay current on trends in higher education, student mental health, substance use, and wellbeing.
• Assume other responsibilities as directed by the Associate Director and/or Director related to student wellbeing.

Other Duties

• Serve on divisional committees and working groups to enrich staff experiences and resources.
• Participate in division-wide events (e.g., Move-In Day) to support colleagues and ensure smooth operations.
• Maintain an understanding of institutional and departmental financial policies related to travel, procurement, expense, and time reporting.
• Support colleagues across the division to encourage the implementation of divisional goals and strategic priorities.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in social work or counseling from an accredited institution is required.
• A master’s degree in social work or counseling from an accredited institution and relevant licensure is strongly preferred. (A master’s degree in a related mental health field or relevant higher education area may also be considered.)
• Possession of, or eligibility to obtain, an appropriate license (e.g., LMSW, LCSW, NCC, LPC, LMFT) or case management certification is preferred.
• Three years of experience or the equivalent is preferred.
• Knowledge of care management, intake/assessment, and brief counseling techniques is preferred.
• Experience with care coordination, resource connection, working with students in crisis, and creating behavioral intervention plans is preferred.
• Strong organizational skills and self-motivation are preferred.
• Knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment in a university setting is preferred.
• Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds at a highly selective institution is preferred.
