About the role

The USF Department of Emergency Management (DEM) offers federal work-study students the opportunity to work with DEM on the Tampa Campus. This role is designed to enhance a student’s experience in the emergency management field through involvement with emergency management programs and networking.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and review emergency plans and policies.
  • Create outreach materials for emergency management preparedness and response programs and participate in educational outreach.
  • Attend meetings with representatives from the local, state, federal, non-profit, and private sector emergency management community.
  • Develop and participate in drills and exercises to practice emergency response procedures.
  • Conduct research within the field of Emergency Management.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled USF student with a current Federal Work Study (FWS) award for 2026-2027.
  • Applicants must demonstrate proof of their FWS award by printing their “Award Offer” screen from Student Self-Service (accessible via my.usf.edu > Student Self Service > Financial Aid > Award Offer).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Students pursuing a career in emergency/disaster management, homeland security, criminal justice, or a related field.
  • Strong written communication skills.

Skills

  • General computer and administrative skills, including detail-oriented processes.
  • Ability to quickly learn new computer systems.

Pay

$15 per hour

Schedule

  • Flexible around class schedule within business hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday–Friday.
  • In-person, in-office attendance required.
  • Average of 20 hours per week.
