About the Role
Habitat for Humanity has proven that stewardship can be a cost-effective strategy for driving long-term revenue at scale. The organization mails 4–6 non-appeal stewardship-specific mailings, plus ongoing acknowledgments, calls, and emails, while keeping CPDR (Cost Per Donor Retention) down.
In 2020 and 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many nonprofits saw an increase in Direct Marketing gifts and revenue. However, retaining these donors became challenging for Habitat as time passed. To address this, Habitat implemented various initiatives in 2024 and 2025, which improved their overall donor retention by 4.2% year-over-year in 2025.
Responsibilities
Leslie Willeford, Associate Director of Donor Development at Habitat for Humanity International, will share the successes and challenges of their stewardship efforts, which may help other organizations retain more donors.
The session will cover:
- The long-term impact of stewardship on donor retention
- How to utilize stewardship to see donors as more than just their wallets
- The role of localized campaigns in deepening a donor's emotional ROI
- Examples of stewardship-appeal hybrid campaigns
- Learnings from prior tests proving the value of both stewardship and solicitation working together
