Sr. System Administrator

This position reports to the Director of IT Systems and Cloud Operations as an integral member of the IT Systems and Cloud Operations team. The successful candidate will install, configure, and maintain both physical and virtual servers that support Lamar University's mission, applying technical knowledge in implementing policies for system security, ensuring high availability, and building technological sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and administer physical and virtual Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers, including but not limited to: user accounts, file/directory permissions, storage management, patch management, security management, NTFS/Share management, and OS upgrades.
  • Monitor all Linux enterprise servers and proactively intervene to solve problems.
  • Create and maintain documentation of system processes and procedures.
  • Provide OS and application troubleshooting support as needed.
  • Coordinate with vendors and technical support as required.
  • Generate, develop, and distribute statistical reports for management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a closely related field, or an associate degree with 5 years of verifiable experience in a related field.
  • A minimum of 2 or more years of verifiable experience in a related field, with a portion of this experience reflecting increasing responsibility and scope.
  • Advanced knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux server administration, CLI, troubleshooting, and day-to-day administration.
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux file structures, security best practices, storage configuration, package installation, and file/directory permissions.
  • Advanced knowledge of virtualization administration – VMware ESX preferred.
  • Knowledge of fiber channel SAN storage administration, SAN/NAS storage systems, cloud hosting services (Azure, AWS), backup system technologies, and monitoring system technologies (NAGIOS preferred).
  • Skill in both verbal and written communication and working in a team.
  • May be required to lift objects weighing 15 pounds or more.

Qualifications

  • At least two (2) years of experience working in a data center environment.
  • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification (desired).

Schedule

Mainly Monday through Friday, 8 am – 5 pm, but some after-hours and weekend work required as needed.

This position is designated as a critical infrastructure role and is subject to Cyber Intelligence Review in accordance with Executive Order GA-48. Additionally, this position is classified as Security-Sensitive and is subject to criminal history record review under Texas Education Code 51.215.
