About the Role

The Senior FPGA Engineer designs, tests, and documents safety-critical hardware for high-reliability embedded aerospace and ground-based vehicle systems. This role involves developing and supporting FPGA/CPLD designs through all phases of design and system integration.

Responsibilities

  • Perform requirements generation, design, RTL-synthesis, test bench development, and design simulation.
  • Conduct static timing and power analysis, and requirements-based design verification.
  • Support prototype evaluation, design-to-cost tradeoffs, design reviews, qualification test support, system integration, production, and obsolescence.
  • Stay current with advancements in FPGA design and digital hardware engineering.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers and senior management to enhance and build applications.
  • Design, develop, test, and modify hardware systems to meet specifications and requirements.
  • Utilize internal processes and tools for hardware development.
  • Contribute to engineering estimates for hardware designs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and 5-10+ years’ work experience, or Master’s Degree and 3+ years of work experience.
  • 5-10+ years of circuit design experience with demonstrated ability to design HDL-based FPGAs and CPLDs.
  • Knowledge of digital electronic devices and circuit design principles.
  • Hands-on hardware build, test, and integration experience.
  • Motivated self-starter with strong teamwork skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and follow-up skills.
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills.
  • Experience with VHDL, System Verilog designs, and UVM test benches.
  • Up to 25% travel required.

Skills

  • Experience with Matlab and Simulink for auto-generation of FPGA code.
  • Familiarity with FPGA integration into digital circuit card designs to ensure electrical integrity.
  • Experience with design/analysis tools such as Timing Designer and Hyperlynx (a plus).
  • Preferred experience with:
    • Microprocessor/Microcontroller interfaces (I2C, SPI, CAN bus, ARINC-825).
    • Memory interfaces (SDRAM controllers, Flash, SRAM).
    • Serial interfaces (MIL-STD-1553, ARINC-429, RS422, RS485, AFDX ARINC-664).
    • FPGA design using Microsemi, Xilinx, Lattice, Altera, etc.
    • RTCA/DO-254 hardware development objectives.
    • Design tools such as Synplify, ModelSim, Questasim.
    • High-speed digital circuit card design, including part placement, routing, constraint generation, and signal integrity analysis.
    • State machines and code coverage.
    • Requirements Management tools (e.g., DOORS), Configuration Management, and Problem Reporting tools.
    • Commercial certification objectives and formal validation/verification procedures.
    • Flight-critical systems (fly-by-wire Flight Controls, Actuators, Air Data Systems, Pilot Inceptors, Inertial Sensors, Autopilot systems).
