Special Litigation Advisor

About the role

Special Litigation Advisors serve as expert legal consultants on department-wide legal issues related to federal accountability. They provide complex legal and strategic analysis across a variety of disciplines, such as constitutional law, administrative law, civil rights, environmental protection, and federal funding and appropriations issues. They support the Chief Counsel for Special Litigation (CCSL) and Directorate in developing and implementing departmental policies and operational practices that ensure the timely, thorough, and thoughtful evaluation of federal accountability matters.

They also review and assist with federal litigation performed on behalf of the Attorney General and client agencies. In this role, Special Litigation Advisors coordinate and manage communications and legal actions concerning federal accountability, working closely with internal legal divisions, special assistants, and Directorate. They also engage with external stakeholders, including the Governor’s Office, state legislators, agencies, and private advocacy organizations. Operating with a significant degree of independence, Special Litigation Advisors carry out their duties under the general oversight of the CCSL.

Responsibilities

• Provide complex legal and strategic analysis on federal accountability matters across disciplines such as constitutional law, administrative law, civil rights, environmental protection, and federal funding and appropriations.
• Support the Chief Counsel for Special Litigation (CCSL) and Directorate in developing and implementing departmental policies and operational practices.
• Review and assist with federal litigation performed on behalf of the Attorney General and client agencies.
• Coordinate and manage communications and legal actions concerning federal accountability.
• Collaborate with internal legal divisions, special assistants, and Directorate.
• Engage with external stakeholders, including the Governor’s Office, state legislators, agencies, and private advocacy organizations.

Qualifications

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

The Deputy Attorney General classifications qualify for a “Hire Above Minimum" (HAM) salary. The starting salary for each classification will be:

• Deputy Attorney General Range A (0-24 months): $8,846
• Deputy Attorney General Range B (2-5 years): $9,956
• Deputy Attorney General III (5 years): $12,046
• Deputy Attorney General IV (6+ years): $13,313

New to State candidates will be hired at the starting HAM salary of the classification.

Pay

• DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL IV: $11,993.00 - $16,096.00 per month
• DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL III: $10,852.00 - $15,325.00 per month (shall be considered)
• DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL: $7,969.00 - $12,026.00 per month (shall be considered)

Effective July 1, 2025, state employees are subject to temporary wage reductions in exchange for Personal Leave Program (PLP) accruals. The specific rate and hours earned were negotiated and agreed upon by each bargaining unit.

The position is located in the Special Litigation Section, Directorate Division, and may be filled in Sacramento, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, or San Diego.
