Accountability Statement

The Special Assets Commercial Banker is responsible for:

  • Active management, resolution, and risk mitigation of a large, complex portfolio of criticized, classified, and non-performing commercial credit relationships.
  • Protecting the Bank’s loan assets, ensuring accurate and timely risk identification, and executing disciplined credit strategies consistent with regulatory expectations and internal credit policy.
  • Independent credit judgment, advanced financial analysis, and leading complex borrower situations involving restructuring, enforcement, exit, or liquidation.
  • Serving as the primary relationship owner for assigned credits and acting as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, Credit, Risk, Legal, and Commercial Banking partners.

Essential Job Functions

The Special Assets Commercial Banker manages a portfolio of complex special assets relationships, typically consisting of 10–50 borrowers with individual outstandings generally ranging up to $50 million per relationship. They maintain full accountability for assigned credits, including borrower strategy, risk rating integrity, documentation quality, monitoring cadence, and resolution outcomes. They serve as the primary point of contact for borrowers, guarantors, and internal stakeholders throughout the lifecycle of problem credit management.

To perform credit analysis, risk identification, and regulatory alignment, they:

  • Perform comprehensive financial and enterprise-level analysis to assess borrower viability, liquidity, cash flow sustainability, collateral coverage, and guarantor strength.
  • Ensure timely and accurate risk ratings, classifications, accrual decisions, and impairment assessments in accordance with regulatory guidance and internal credit policy.
  • Identify emerging risks and deteriorating trends early and take decisive action to mitigate loss exposure.
  • Maintain complete, well-supported credit files suitable for regulatory examination, including clear articulation of risk, mitigants, and management’s strategy.

To develop, document, and execute formal plans of action for criticized and non-performing credits, they:

  • Develop, document, and execute formal plans of action for criticized and non-performing credits, including restructures, forbearance agreements, amendments, exits, note sales, and liquidation strategies.
  • Lead borrower negotiations involving covenant violations, defaults, collateral deficiencies, guarantor support, and sponsor engagement.
  • Maintain deep working knowledge of loan documentation, including credit agreements, covenants, guaranties, collateral perfection, mortgages, and intercreditor agreements.
  • Partner with Legal to manage enforcement actions, including UCC remedies, foreclosure, receivership, bankruptcy proceedings, and asset disposition.

To act as a key resource and mentor, they:

  • Act as a key resource to Commercial Bankers, Portfolio Managers, and Credit Officers regarding problem credits and transition into Special Assets.
  • Act as a “player-coach,” personally managing the most complex relationships while providing guidance and mentoring to analysts and junior associates.
  • Prepare and present executive-level credit memoranda and materials for senior management, problem loan committees, and regulatory examinations.
  • Fulfill first-line-of-defense responsibilities by proactively identifying, managing, and escalating risk within assigned relationships.

Job Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field required. Equivalent combination of education and relevant banking experience may be considered.
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in commercial banking, special assets, credit, or workout management with direct responsibility for complex problem credits. Experience of legal processes, including bankruptcy and UCC foreclosure.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Advanced understanding of financial analysis, commercial real estate lending, enterprise valuation, and complex credit structures. Demonstrated ability to exercise independent credit judgment in high-risk, high-exposure situations. Strong negotiation, written, and verbal communication skills, with experience interacting with senior executives and regulators. Working knowledge of bankruptcy, foreclosure, UCC enforcement, and regulatory guidance related to criticized and classified assets. Highest standards of integrity, accountability, and professional judgment. Understanding of regulatory requirements and commercial loan documentation.
