Social Media Marketing Assistant (Student/Work Study)
Student Social Media Assistant position within the Office of Marketing and Communications, offering hands-on experience in social media strategy, content creation, and campaign management.
About the role
The selected candidate will collaborate with the office’s social media specialist on both long-term projects (e.g., campaign strategy) and short-term tasks (e.g., monitoring analytics). Ideal applicants are avid, sophisticated users of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, with a strong interest in marketing, content creation, public relations, or social media.
Responsibilities
- Participate in brainstorming sessions for content across various social media platforms, with a heavy focus on short-form videos and TikTok.
- Produce videos that portray UM-Flint’s brand in a positive light.
- Create content for UM-Flint’s official social media channels.
- Collaborate with the social media specialist and photographer/videographer on content creation.
- Write captions for social media posts tailored to the audience and platform.
- Monitor competitors and peers for trends.
- Understand the role of photography, graphics, and videography in social media engagement and content creation.
- Keep an eye on social media trends (primarily TikTok) and brainstorm ways to incorporate them into UM-Flint’s content.
- Assist with reviewing campus partner social media channels to identify collaboration and amplification opportunities.
- Attend major campus events to capture photo and video content for social media.
- Assist with live or real-time content coverage, such as Instagram Stories, short-form video, and behind-the-scenes content.
- Support content coverage at major events, including:
- Move-In Day
- Commencement ceremonies
- Campus open houses
- Student life events and campus programming
- Signature university events (e.g., Giving Blueday, Giving Tuesday, MLK Day, Fall Welcome Back, Homecoming, sporting events, Late Night Breakfast)
Requirements
- Must be a UM-Flint sophomore, junior, or senior.
- Strong interest and skills in marketing, content creation, public relations, and/or social media.
- Inherent curiosity in researching emerging social media trends and evaluating their potential use at UM-Flint.
Qualifications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an eye for detail and creativity.
- Proficiency in using social media platforms and content management systems.
- Basic understanding of digital marketing principles and practices.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Familiarity with graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus.
- Familiarity with video editing tools (both in-app and dedicated applications like Adobe Premiere) is preferred.
- Reliability and flexibility to assist during high-impact university events when coverage is needed.
- Comfortable interacting with students, staff, and event attendees when capturing content.
Schedule
Part-time, flexible hours to accommodate the student’s academic schedule. Approximately 10–15 hours per week.
Modes of Work
Hybrid: work may be performed both onsite and offsite, with an expected recurring onsite presence. Occasional onsite work may be required based on unit leadership or job requirements.
