About the Role

The Shop Foreman oversees daily operations in the service department, ensuring work orders and invoices are completed efficiently, warranty claims are prepared, and aged work-in-process is minimized. This role supports administrative tasks, inventory control, service diagnostics, repairs, and team management while maintaining a safe and organized work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Complete work orders and invoices, including service data and warranty information.
  • Open and close work orders promptly to minimize aged work-in-process.
  • Perform basic diagnostics, determine necessary repairs, and advise customers on replacement parts.
  • Repair and replace damaged or worn parts, then test equipment for proper performance and compliance.
  • Prepare reports and forms related to work orders, noting causes of failure or problems.
  • Maintain service department tool inventory and ensure the condition of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Read and interpret operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Assist in completing job status reports and maintaining billing cycle efficiencies.
  • Support yearly performance reviews for Service Technicians and determine labor needs for workloads.
  • Assist factory and engineers with diagnosing technical machine issues.
  • Help employees obtain technician certification and complete training needs.
  • Conduct monthly safety meetings and maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work area.
  • Deliver parts, run errands, and assist with other duties as directed by management.
  • Utilize computer programs, John Deere communication tools, and Microsoft Office for administrative tasks.
  • Maintain current knowledge of company and competitor products.
  • Quote jobs using Marketing Service Times (MST’s) and adhere to the Standard Pricing Guide (SPG).

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One-year certificate from a college or technical school or at least three years of related experience/training in a subordinate position.
  • Strong knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in repairing heavy construction equipment.
  • Ability to identify complex problems, evaluate options, and implement solutions.
  • Proficiency in operating diagnostic vehicles and equipment.
  • Strong customer service focus and attention to detail.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, internet tools, and basic office machines (copier, fax, printer).
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with customers and coworkers.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, process work accurately, and meet commitments/deadlines.
  • Capability to multitask, organize, and prioritize under time constraints.
  • Openness to new procedures, technology, and structural changes.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
