Job Summary
The Access Registrar is the first point of contact for patients entering the healthcare system. This role is responsible for accurately registering patients, verifying insurance, collecting payments, and ensuring all required information is complete to support patient care and the organization’s revenue cycle. The position requires strong customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
About the Role
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED required; college coursework in business or accounting preferred
Maryland resident
Individuals eligible for the Maryland Service Year Program (generally ages 18–24)
Experience: Prior customer service experience preferred
Healthcare registration, scheduling, or business office experience preferred
Responsibilities
- Register patients by collecting and entering demographic, insurance, and billing information
- Verify insurance coverage, pre-authorizations, and medical necessity
- Inform patients of financial responsibility and collect payments when applicable
- Communicate with physician offices and internal departments to gather and validate information
- Schedule services and ensure all documentation and orders are complete
- Answer phones and assist patients, families, and visitors in a professional manner
- Maintain accurate records in the electronic health record (EHR) system
- Follow up on accounts and resolve registration or billing issues
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of registration, admissions, and insurance verification processes
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to multitask and work under pressure with minimal supervision
- Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry
- Working knowledge of medical terminology and insurance payers
- Ability to use tact, diplomacy, and sound judgment when interacting with patients
- Basic computer and office equipment proficiency
