Senior Payroll Specialist
About the Role
The Senior Payroll Specialist manages the complete lifecycle payroll for US, Canada, and Mexico BlackLine employees, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, provincial, and other regulatory obligations. This role also provides backup support for other global payrolls managed by the US payroll team.
Responsibilities
- Process, reconcile, and publish payroll and compensation data to ensure compliance with company policy, SOX, GAAP, and regulatory agencies.
- Implement, maintain, and review payroll processes and accounting systems for timely and accurate biweekly multi-state US payroll processing, including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
- Create and peer-review data input of payroll team members to ensure accuracy.
- Provide operational oversight and governance for Canada (via Managed Services) and Mexico (via CloudPay) payroll, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance, along with backup support for other global payrolls.
- Maintain and create the payroll department SOP library.
- Set up and manage local/state/province/country tax jurisdictions; oversee Canadian statutory compliance (CRA remittances, provincial tax variance, ROE issuance) and Mexican statutory compliance (IMSS, SAT), including coordination with third-party administrators for INFONAVIT and FONACOT/FONAVIT.
- Respond to inquiries, complaints, or problems, making necessary adjustments while providing high-level customer service for payroll-related questions.
- Act as a subject matter expert in payroll processing.
- Advise managers and employees on FLSA overtime policies and pay policies related to various types of leave.
- Oversee the integrity of payroll data input into payroll systems.
- Prepare ad hoc reports on employee pay data.
- Partner cross-functionally with People Operations, Finance and Accounting, and Benefits teams on projects and workflows impacting payroll.
- Provide input and assist or lead in developing and implementing system enhancements and projects to improve payroll processing.
- Assist in special projects as required.
- Review timecards in the timekeeping system for accuracy.
- Liaise with ADP, CloudPay, and other payroll vendors to troubleshoot problems and provide solutions.
- Ensure the accuracy of special and off-cycle checks for final termination pay, etc.
- Download and review quarterly payroll tax returns.
- Review wage and garnishment orders.
Requirements
- 8+ years of related payroll experience.
- Working knowledge of payroll SOX audit procedures and payroll tax laws.
- Extremely detail-oriented with excellent analytical and organizational skills.
- Highest degree of integrity and ability to handle confidential company and employee information.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines.
- Skill in evaluating and analyzing technical payroll activities.
- Self-motivated and directed with a positive outlook.
- Well-developed problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office applications with advanced Excel skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working for an international/global organization.
- Experience overseeing payroll delivered through third-party or managed service providers (e.g., ADP, CloudPay).
- Workday experience.
- Spanish language proficiency, given Mexico payroll and vendor support.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification.

Pay
Salary Range: $86,000.00 - $108,000.00. Placement within this range depends on prior relevant job experience, skill set, and geographic location. In addition to base pay, BlackLine offers incentive programs and a robust benefits package.
Schedule
Candidates who live within a reasonable commute to one of our offices will work in the office at least 3 days a week, with a combination of virtual and in-person interactions.
