About the role
The American Mathematical Society (AMS), founded in 1888, is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to advancing research and connecting the diverse global mathematical community through its publications, meetings, and conferences. The AMS has 30,000 members worldwide and offices in Rhode Island, Michigan, and Washington, DC.
Responsibilities
- Develops, edits, and manages high-quality written content for AMS platforms, including web, email, and print products.
- Writes, edits, and coordinates news and other content for all Society platforms, including AMS articles, website copy, newsletters, press releases, presentations, slides, promotional content, social media posts, prizes and awards, and obituaries.
- Translates complex subject matter into clear, engaging language for diverse AMS audiences.
- Owns and evolves the AMS brand voice, ensuring exceptional editorial quality, strict style compliance, and rigorous fact-checking across all published assets.
- Collaborates with staff, authors, and contributors to create original content that reflects the AMS brand and mission.
- Takes the lead in editing and assists with the posting, publishing, and promoting Math in the Media digests, Mathematical Moments posters, podcasts, videos, and other relevant content to promote awareness and appreciation of mathematics.
- Ensures consistent branding, accessibility, and compliance with organizational standards.
- Manages the Notices digital news presence and provides support in identifying ways to monetize the journal's online and print assets.
- Solicits, shapes, and edits scientific content that reflects the breadth of mathematical activity and community interests.
- Supports the Chief Editor in ensuring the Notices content supports the AMS's reputation, mission, and strategic goals.
- Supports the Society thought leadership and media relations strategy, including pitching story ideas and opinion pieces and answering media requests.
- Plans and schedules content for websites, online newsletters, presentations, slides, social media, campaigns, promotions, and other marketing communications activities in which written content is necessary, in coordination with the Office of Communications and Marketing Team.
- Repurposes and optimizes existing content for multiple platforms and audiences.
- Regularly updates website content (text, images, multimedia, and documents).
- Collaborates with Creative Services and the integrated marketing communications specialists to produce written content with visuals, graphics, and multimedia.
- Contributes to content planning for events, campaigns, and organizational initiatives.
- Owns the content analytics dashboard.
- Regularly tracks the performance of digital content, including web, social, and email, and recommends improvements based on analytics.
- Collaborates with IT/developers on updates, integrations, and security.
- Coordinates with designers to improve visual presentation and usability.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or equivalent experience.
- 4+ years of experience in content writing, marketing, communications, or related field.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and grammatical skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in using data and metrics to drive decision-making.
- Experience managing campaigns across multiple channels (emails, web, print, social media).
- Demonstrated ability to build collaborative, collegial, and strategic partnerships across departments to develop and publish engaging, audience-focused web content.
- Experience partnering with cross-functional teams to support website functionality, performance, accessibility, and user experience, helping ensure a reliable and user-friendly digital presence.
- Demonstrated ability to glean insights from data, such as webpage impact via Google Analytics.
- Proficiency in content management systems, social media platforms, and digital marketing tools.
- Experience in the nonprofit sector and/or membership organizations is highly desirable.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to analyze data and make strategic decisions based on insights.
- Knowledge of marketing and communication strategies.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders.
